News. 001:007 For other "Good News" there isnone; but there are some persons who aretroubling you, and are seeking to distort theGood News concerning Christ. 001:008 But ifeven we or an angel from Heaven should bringyou a Good News different from that which wehave already brought you, let him be accursed.001:009 What I have just said I repeat—if anyone is preaching to you a Good News otherthan that which you originally received, let himbe accursed. 001:010 For is it man's favour orGod's that I aspire to? Or am I seeking toplease men? If I were still a man-pleaser, Ishould not be Christ's bondservant. 001:011For I must tell you, brethren, that the GoodNews which was proclaimed by me is not suchas man approves of. 001:012 For, in fact, it wasnot from man that I received or learnt it, but bya revelation from Jesus Christ. 001:013 For youhave heard of my early career in Judaism—howI furiously persecuted the Church of God, andmade havoc of it; 001:014 and how in devotionto Judaism I outstripped many men of my ownage among my people, being far more zealousthan they on behalf of the traditions of myforefathers. 001:015 But when He who set meapart even from my birth, and called me by Hisgrace, 001:016 saw fit to reveal His Son withinme in order that I might tell among the Gentilesthe Good News concerning Him, at once I didnot confer with any human being, 001:017 nordid I go up to Jerusalem to those who were myseniors in the Apostleship, but I went away intoArabia, and afterwards came back to
Damascus. 001:018 Then, three years later, Iwent up to Jerusalem to inquire for Peter, and Ispent a fortnight with him. 001:019 I saw noneof the other Apostles, except James, the Lord'sbrother. 001:020 In making these assertions Iam speaking the truth, as in the sight of God.001:021 Afterwards I visited Syria and Cilicia.001:022 But to the Christian Churches inJudaea I was personally unknown. 001:023They only heard it said, "He who was once ourpersecutor is now telling the Good News of thefaith of which he formerly made havoc."001:024 And they gave glory to God on myaccount. 002:001 Later still, after an interval offourteen years, I again went up to Jerusalem incompany with Barnabas, taking Titus also withme. 002:002 I went up in obedience to arevelation of God's will; and I explained tothem the Good News which I proclaim amongthe Gentiles. To the leaders of the Church thisexplanation was made in private, lest by anymeans I should be running, or should alreadyhave run, in vain. 002:003 But although mycompanion Titus was a Greek they did notinsist upon even his being circumcised.002:004 Yet there was danger of this throughthe false brethren secretly introduced into theChurch, who had stolen in to spy out thefreedom which is ours in Christ Jesus, in orderto rob us of it. 002:005 But not for an hour didwe give way and submit to them; in order thatthe Good News might continue with you in itsintegrity. 002:006 From those leaders I gainednothing new. Whether they were men of
importance or not, matters nothing to me—God recognizes no external distinctions. Tome, at any rate, the leaders imparted nothingnew. 002:007 Indeed, when they saw that I wasentrusted with the preaching of the Good Newsto the Gentiles as Peter had been with that tothe Jews— 002:008 for He who had been atwork within Peter with a view to hisApostleship to the Jews had also been at workwithin me with a view to my Apostleship to theGentiles— 002:009 and when they perceivedthe mission which was graciously entrusted tome, they (that is to say, James, Peter, andJohn, who were considered to be the pillars ofthe Church) welcomed Barnabas and me totheir fellowship on the understanding that wewere to go to the Gentiles and they to theJews. 002:010 Only they urged that we shouldremember their poor—a thing which wasuppermost in my own mind. 002:011 Now whenPeter visited Antioch, I remonstrated with himto his face, because he had incurred justcensure. 002:012 For until certain personscame from James he had been accustomed toeat with Gentiles; but as soon as these personscame, he withdrew and separated himself forfear of the Circumcision party. 002:013 Andalong with him the other Jews also concealedtheir real opinions, so that even Barnabas wascarried away by their lack ofstraightforwardness. 002:014 As soon as I sawthat they were not walking uprightly in thespirit of the Good News, I said to Peter, beforethem all, "If you, though you are a Jew, live as
a Gentile does, and not as a Jew, how can youmake the Gentiles follow Jewish customs?002:015 You and I, though we are Jews by birthand not Gentile sinners, 002:016 know that it isnot through obedience to Law that a man canbe declared free from guilt, but only throughfaith in Jesus Christ. We have thereforebelieved in Christ Jesus, for the purpose ofbeing declared free from guilt, through faith inChrist and not through obedience to Law. Forthrough obedience to Law no human beingshall be declared free from guilt. 002:017 But ifwhile we are seeking in Christ acquittal fromguilt we ourselves are convicted of sin, Christthen encourages us to sin! No, indeed. 002:018Why, if I am now rebuilding that structure ofsin which I had demolished, I am therebyconstituting myself a transgressor; 002:019 forit is by the Law that I have died to the Law, inorder that I may live to God. 002:020 I havebeen crucified with Christ, and it is no longer Ithat live, but Christ that lives in me; and thelife which I now live in the body I live throughfaith in the Son of God who loved me and gaveHimself up to death on my behalf. 002:021 I donot nullify the grace of God; for if acquittalfrom guilt is obtainable through the Law, thenChrist has died in vain." 003:001 You foolishGalatians! Whose sophistry has bewitched you— you to whom Jesus Christ has been vividlyportrayed as on the Cross? 003:002 Answer methis one question, "Is it on the ground of yourobedience to the Law that you received theSpirit, or is it because, when you heard, you
believed?" 003:003 Are you so foolish? Havingbegun by the Spirit, are you now going to reachperfection through what is external? 003:004Have you endured such sufferings to nopurpose—if indeed it has been to no purpose?003:005 He who gives you His Spirit and worksmiracles among you— does He do so on theground of your obedience to the Law, or is itthe result of your having heard and believed:003:006 even as Abraham believed God, andhis faith was placed to his account asrighteousness? 003:007 Notice therefore thatthose who possess faith are true sons ofAbraham. 003:008 And the Scripture, foreseeing that in consequence of faith Godwould declare the nations to be free from guilt, sent beforehand the Good News to Abraham, saying, "In you all the nations shall beblessed." 003:009 So we see that it is thosewho possess faith that are blessed withbelieving Abraham. 003:010 All who aredepending upon their own obedience to theLaw are under a curse, for it is written, "Cursedis every one who does not remain faithful to allthe precepts of the Law, and practise them."003:011 It is evident, too, that no one can findacceptance with God simply by obeying theLaw, because "the righteous shall live byfaith," 003:012 and the Law has nothing to dowith faith. It teaches that "he who does thesethings shall live by doing them." 003:013 Christhas purchased our freedom from the curse ofthe Law by becoming accursed for us—because "Cursed is every one who is hanged
upon a tree." 003:014 Our freedom has beenthus purchased in order that in Christ Jesusthe blessing belonging to Abraham may comeupon the nations, so that through faith we mayreceive the promised Spirit. 003:015 Brethren, even a covenant made by a man—to borrow anillustration from daily life—when once formallysanctioned is not liable to be set aside oradded to. 003:016 (Now the promises weregiven to Abraham and to his seed. God did notsay "and to seeds," as if speaking of many, but"and to your seed," since He spoke of only one— and this is Christ.) 003:017 I mean that theCovenant which God had already formallymade is not abrogated by the Law which wasgiven four hundred and thirty years later—soas to annul the promise. 003:018 For if theinheritance comes through obedience to Law, itno longer comes because of a promise. But, asa matter of fact, God has granted it to Abrahamin fulfilment of a promise. 003:019 Why thenwas the Law given? It was imposed later on forthe sake of defining sin, until the seed shouldcome to whom God had made the promise; andits details were laid down by a mediator withthe help of angels. 003:020 But there cannot bea mediator where only one individual isconcerned. 003:021 God, however, is only one.Is the Law then opposed to the promises ofGod? No, indeed; for if a Law had been givenwhich could have conferred Life, righteousnesswould certainly have come by the Law. 003:022But Scripture has shown that all mankind arethe prisoners of sin, in order that the promised
blessing, which depends on faith in JesusChrist, may be given to those who believe.003:023 Before this faith came, we Jews wereperpetual prisoners under the Law, living underrestraints and limitations in preparation for thefaith which was soon to be revealed. 003:024So that the Law has acted the part of a tutor-slave to lead us to Christ, in order that throughfaith we may be declared to be free from guilt.003:025 But now that this faith has come, weare no longer under a tutor-slave. 003:026 Youare all sons of God through faith in ChristJesus; 003:027 for all of you who have beenbaptized into Christ, have clothed yourselveswith Christ. 003:028 In Him the distinctionsbetween Jew and Gentile, slave and free man, male and female, disappear; you are all one inChrist Jesus. 003:029 And if you belong toChrist, then you are indeed true descendants ofAbraham, and are heirs in fulfilment of thepromise. 004:001 Now I say that so long as anheir is a child, he in no respect differs from aslave, although he is the owner of everything,004:002 but he is under the control ofguardians and trustees until the time his fatherhas appointed. 004:003 So we also, whenspiritually we were children, were subject tothe world's rudimentary notions, and wereenslaved. 004:004 But, when the time was fullycome, God sent forth His Son, born of awoman, born subject to Law, 004:005 in orderto purchase the freedom of all who weresubject to Law, so that we might receiverecognition as sons. 004:006 And because you
are sons, God has sent out the Spirit of HisSon to enter your hearts and cry "Abba! ourFather!" 004:007 Therefore you are no longer aslave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir alsothrough God's own act. 004:008 But at onetime, you Gentiles, having no knowledge ofGod, were slaves to gods which in reality donot exist. 004:009 Now, however, having cometo know God—or rather to be known by Him—how is it you are again turning back to weakand worthless rudimentary notions to whichyou are once more willing to be enslaved?004:010 You scrupulously observe days andmonths, special seasons, and years. 004:011 Iam alarmed about you, and am afraid that Ihave perhaps bestowed labour upon you to nopurpose. 004:012 Brethren, become as I am, Ibeseech you; for I have also become like you.In no respect did you behave badly to me.004:013 And you know that in those early daysit was on account of bodily infirmity that Iproclaimed the Good News to you, 004:014 andyet the bodily infirmity which was such a trialto you, you did not regard with contempt orloathing, but you received me as if I had beenan angel of God or Christ Jesus Himself!004:015 I ask you, then, what has become ofyour self-congratulations? For I bear youwitness that had it been possible you wouldhave torn out your own eyes and have giventhem to me. 004:016 Can it be that I havebecome your enemy through speaking the truthto you? 004:017 These men pay court to you,but not with honourable motives.
