Description
During the Roman Empire, lawyers thought that the richest citizens had to devote themselves to the management of their city. The analysis of a Latin inscription from Marseilles explains how some of them agreed to give lots of money to their city wich made them enjoy the privileages of local rulers, allowing them at the same time not to deal with local affairs. This text suggests that the romanization of the institutions of Marseilles took place under the reign of Hadrian.
