   1. These notes aim to -IMPROVE COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN BOWLS PLAYERS.   2. They do so by achieving the following objectives - (a) Examine actual communications noted during many different actual games. (b) Comment on each communication (c) Suggest better communications.  3. However People (including Bowls Players) vary in their attitude to the communications that may help or hinder their performance. Thus some Readers will disagree with the criticisms made and/or the suggested improvements.   SECTION B – IMPROVE THE CALLS MADE BY SKIPPERS .   OBJECTIVES OF THIS SECTION . . 4. These notes aim to - (a) Encourage Skippers to give more attention to the calls they make .  (b) Encourage Players to recognise vague and unclear calls and ask questions to clarify just what the Skipper wants. (However some Players like to receive a vague/unclear call so that they can play the shot they want to play. In this case, such Players have an excuse for not doing what they suspect the Skipper wants. Further these Players will reject some of the suggestions made in these notes)  TWO BROAD OBJECTIVES OF CALLS FROM SKIPPERS .  5. Skippers should want their Players to  (a) Know exactly the shot they want them to play OR  (b) Know that the Players can play their own shot in all or some aspects.  6. But some Skippers use calls that do not achieve these objectives. They do not make it clear what they want the Player to try to do.  Calls – Skipper 2/01

IMPROVE COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN PLAYERS .   REASONS FOR POOR CALLS BY SKIPPERS .  7. Sometimes Skippers know the shot they want played but the words they use to communicate the shot have a variety of meanings. They do not know, or check on, the meaning the Player gives to the call.  8. Sometimes Skippers do not know the weight they should call for a particular shot. Some Skippers avoid giving a weight for such shots.  9. Sometimes Skippers do NOT know precisely what they want. Thus they consciously or unconsciously give vague and/or unclear calls. Such calls hide the Skipper’s inability to decide the shot to call.   ACTUAL CALLS MADE, POSSIBLE QUESTIONS/COMMENTS, AND A SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENT.  10. The following tables have three columns. The first column shows actual calls made. (Some Readers may find it difficult to believe that this column contains actual calls. If so, they should start listening to the calls Skippers actually make.)  11. The second column suggests what the Receiver of the call might have said (a) in order to clarify the meaning of the call and/or (b) express their annoyance. Probably some Players would have made the reply in their mind or under their breath.  12. The third column suggests a better approach .  13. The headings in each subsection suggest - in broad terms - a possible intention by the Caller.  14. These cover the following –

(a) Vague Calls – unclear what the Caller wants (h) A comparison with the previous bowl (b) More than just a draw (i) An Unwise Call (c) Do not drop short (j) A Result Stated (d) An object (jack and/or bowl) to hit (k) Harmful Calls (e) Mention of Weight (l) Possible Contradictions (f) No mention of Weight (m)Comment about a Player (g) Mention of Positive (ly)/ Definite
