Be creative with colours and stripes to create different
animals. Choose the ears you like, or design your own!
Pattern is for size Small (Large).
Materials:
100g Double-Knitting yarn in main colour (A)
50g Double-Knitting yarn in accent colour (B)
Set of 5mm double-pointed needles
Buttons for eyes and/or nose, Felt for decoration
(optional)
Darning needle, sewing needle and thread
1 ball worsted PolarKnit fleece yarn for lining (optional)
Cuff:
Using 2 strands of A, cast on 26st (30st); join to knit in the round
K1, P1 rib for 9 (10) rows
Main Mitten:
K 11 (15) rows, or until this section measures from your wrist to the base of your thumb
Divide stitches evenly onto 2 needles, 13 (15)st each
Knitting back and forth on two needles, continue in stockinette st for 11 rows, ending with a
P row
Decrease top of mitten:
Rows 1, 3, 5, and 7: Sl 1, K1, PSSO, K to last 2 stitches, K2tog
Rows 2, 4, 6: Purl
Cast off purl-wise.
Thumb:
Join yarn to remaining stitches with wrong side of work facing you (so as to start with a P
row)
Continue in stockinette st for 5 rows
Decrease as for top of mitten
Inside Mouth:
Using 2 strands of B, cast on 3 (5)st
Odd-numbered rows, starting with row 1 (3): K in front and back of the first and last st, K all
other stitches (total of 11st at the end of the 7th row)
Rows 2, 4, and 6: Purl.
Continue in reverse stockinette st for 19 (21) rows, ending with a P row.
Decrease as for top of mitten
Antlers (Suggested animal: Giraffe.To make antlers stand up, stuff them with batting or scrap yarn
before attaching to mitten):
Using 2 strands of B, cast on 6 st; join to knit in the round
K 7 rows
Next row: Inc in 1st, 3rd, and 5th st; K all other stitches
Next row: K
Next row: Inc in 1st, 4th, and 7th st; K all other stitches
Next 2 rows: K2tog around; draw yarn through remaining stitches
Big Pointed Ears (Suggested animal: Giraffe, Bunny):
Using 2 strands of yarn, cast on 12 st; join to knit in the round
K 8 rows
Next 2 rows: K2 tog around; draw yarn through remaining stitches
Flatten and fold in half lengthwise, use darning needle and yarn to stitch together at the
bottom
Small Pointed Ears (Suggested animals: Kitten, Pig)
Using 2 strands of A, cast on 10st; join to knit in the round
K 3 rows
Next row: K2 tog around
Next row: K1, K2 tog; draw yarn through remaining stitches.
Small (Large) Round Ears (Suggested animals: Polar/Teddy Bear, Panda, Monkey, Hippo)
Using 2 strands of A, cast on 9st (12st); join to knit in the round
K 3 (5) rows
Next row: K2 tog 4 (5) times, then K1 for small ears; draw yarn through remaining stitches.
(For hippo, make Large Round Ears, fold in half lengthwise, stitch together along the bottom)
Nose:
Using darning needle and B, duplicate stitch to achieve desired nose pattern. Suggestion
below, or use a button or piece of felt:
Finishing:
Using sewing needle and thread, attach buttons for eyes.
Using yarn and darning needle, attach the inside of the mouth and antlers.
Attach ears to mitten with darning needle and yarn.
Weave in yarn ends.
Repeat all above steps for second mitten. For added warmth, knit a fleece lining. Using 1 ball of
worsted PolarKnit fleece (single strand), pick up stitches at the cuff and knit an identical mitten.
Stuff the lining inside the mitten.
