Funk-o-politan Hat
Sized to fit an average adult head
Materials:
1 skein Cascade Softspun
180m/197yds
2 buttons.
Needles:

40cm circular. 6mm (US 10) double point set
Tension:
15 sts = 4” in pattern stitch on 6mm
(US 10) needles.
With 4.5mm (US 7) circular needles, cast on
100 sts. Join into round and work in K1, P1
rib for 10 rounds.
Work short row shaping for the peak of the
hat as follows:
K1, P1 for 72 sts. Wrap the next st as follows:
Bring yarn to front. Slip next st knitwise.
Bring yarn to back. Slip the slipped st back to
the left hand needle. Turn to the wrong side.
K1, P1 for 44 sts. Wrap the next st as before.

Resume working in K1, P1 to the beginning of
the round. When you come to a slipped st,
pick up the yarn wrapper at its base and work
it together with the slipped st. This will
prevent a hole forming at the places where
the work was turned. Work 10 more rounds,
working the remaining slipped sts together
with their wrappers as you encounter them.
Change to 6mm (US 10) circular needles.
Work a foundation row for the pattern stitch
as follows:
*K1, yo, K1, P2* Repeat between *'s to end of

Make I-cord band for front of hat as follows:

cast on 4 sts. *K4 then
without turning to the
wrong side
, slide these 4 sts to the opposite
end of the needle. Pull the yarn tightly from
the end of the row to the beginning of the
row and K4.* Repeat between * until I-cord
measures 8”. Cast off.
Finishing: Cut peak stiffening out of a pop
bottle, margarine tub or other light plastic
container, using the template below. Fold the
ribbing in half to the inside of the hat and
sew 28 sts of the cast on edge to 28 sts of
the last round of ribbing on either side of the
beginning of the round for a total of 56 sts
sewn at the centre back of the hat. Insert the
peak stiffening into the fold and sew the
remaining sts of the cast on edge to the last
round of ribbing, stretching the ribbing
lengthwise to fit over the widest point of the
peak. Centre the I-cord band over the peak of
hat and sew in place. Attach 2 buttons to
each end of the I-cord. Darn in yarn ends.
