Newfie Hat and Cowl

This set uses the honeycomb slip stitch

pattern that is seen in traditional mittens

from Newfoundland. We altered it a little and

used two shades of Noro Silk Garden for

some interesting colour play. In picking the

Noro colours, we found that the less likely

they look like they would work together, the

better the result!

Materials:

Noro Silk Garden 1 ball each in two

contrasting shades

Needles:

5mm (US 8) 40cm (16”) circular

To fit average adult

Hat:

With Main Colour, cast on 72 sts. Join

into the round and work 4 rows in K2, P2 rib.

Next round: Purl. Work in Pattern Stitch as

follows:

Rnd 1-5: Join in Contrast Colour. *Slip 1

purlwise, K4 with Contrast Colour, Slip 1

purlwise* Repeat to end of rnd.

Rnd 6-8: Purl with Main Colour.

Rnd: 9-13: *K2 with Contrast Colour, Slip 2

purlwise, K2* Repeat to end of rnd.

Rnd 14-16: Purl with Main Colour.

Repeat these 16 rnds two more times.

Shape Crown:

Rnd 1: *Slip 1 purlwise, With Contrast Colour,

K2tog, K2, Slip 1 purlwise* Repeat to end of

rnd.

Rnd 2-4: *Slip 1 purlwise, K3 with Contrast

Colour, Slip 1 purlwise* Repeat to end of rnd.

Rnd 5: Purl with Main Colour

Rnd 6: With Main Colour, *P3, P2tog.* Repeat

to end of rnd.

Rnd 7-9: *K1 with Contrast Colour, Slip 1

purlwise, K2 with Contrast Colour* Repeat to

end of rnd.

Rnd 10: Purl with Main Colour

Rnd 11: *With Main Colour, P2, P2tog* Repeat

to end of rnd.

Rnd: 12: *With Contrast Colour, K1, K2tog*

Repeat to end of rnd.

Rnd 13: *With Contrast Colour, K2tog* Repeat

to end of rnd.

Break yarn and with a darning needle, weave

ends through remaining sts. Draw closed and

fasten off.

Cowl:

With Main Colour, cast on 84 sts. Join

into the round. Work in K2, P2 rib for 4 rnds.

Work in Pattern Stitch as given for Hat, until

there is just enough Main Colour to work 4

rnds of K2, P2 rib and the cast off rnd. Cast

off.
