INTRODUCTIONThefocusofthissurveyisonstudents’viewsofandparticipationincocurricularactivities.Includedinthesurveyarequestionsaboutstudents’involvement,barrierstogettinginvolved,whatstudentslearnfromtheirparticipation,andhowstudentsobtaininformationaboutcocurricularactivities.ThisPulseSurvey,conductedbyStudentAffairsResearchandAssessment,incollaborationwithUnionandStudentActivities,wasadministeredbyphoneandWeb.Intotal,1,062studentsrespondedtothesurveyfora27%responserate.Byphone,565participated;497participatedbyWeb.Theconfidenceintervalforthetotalsampleis+/2.96%.Oftherespondents,78%areWhite,67%arejuniorsandseniors,and50%arefemale.Analysescomparedtheresponsesofstudentsbygender(menv.women),race(studentsofcolorv.whitestudents),class(lower=firstyearsandsophomores,upper=juniorsandseniors),andresidence(oncampusv.offcampus)forstatisticallysignificantdifferences.ForadditionalinformationaboutthePulsemethodology,pleasevisit:http://studentaffairs.psu.edu/assessment/pulse.FINDINGSStudents’ParticipationinCocurricularActivitiesStudentswereaskedabouttheirlevelofparticipationinavarietyofactivitiesandeventsfacilitatedbyUnionandStudentActivities(USA).Studentsweremostlikelytoreportbeinginvolvedinstudentclubsandorganizations(75%)orinphilanthropicservicesuchasThonorRelayforLife(67%;Figure1).Figure1.PercentageofStudentswhoParticipateinVariousCocurricularActivitiesandEvents

Womenweresignificantlymorelikelythanmentobeinvolvedinclubs(79%comparedto72%),philanthropicserviceactivities(77%comparedto57%),andcommunityserviceactivities(43%comparedto34%)butlesslikelytobeinvolvedincluborintramuralsports(37%comparedto56%;analysesnotshown).Studentsofcolorweresignificantlymorelikelythanwhitestudentstoparticipateinstudentgovernance(14%comparedto8%)andinclubs(83%comparedto74%;analysesnotshown).Studentswholiveoncampusweresignificantlymorelikelythanoffcampusstudentstoparticipateinphilanthropicactivities(74%comparedto65%)andcommunityserviceactivities(47%comparedto36%;analysesnotshown).Lowerclassstudentsweresignificantlymorelikelythanupperclassstudentstoparticipateinphilanthropicservice(73%comparedto64%)andincluborintramuralsports(54%comparedto43%;analysesnotshown).Foreachoftheactivitiesabove,studentswereaskedabouttheirlevelofparticipation.Figure2illustratesthat:Relativelyfewstudentsattendedeventsrelatedtoclubsandphilanthropicservicesbutwerenotactivemembers(8%and25%,respectively),andAsubstantialproportionofstudentsheldexecutivepositions(committeechair,office,orpresident)relatedtothesetwoactivities(17%inclubsand9%inphilanthropicservice).Figure2.NatureofStudentParticipationinClubsandPhilanthropicServices

FactorsInfluencingStudents’ChoiceofCocurricularActivitiesWhenaskedabouttheimportanceofvariousinfluencesindeterminingwhichcocurricularactivitiestoparticipatein,studentsmostoftenrelatedhavingageneralinterestinthethemeoftheactivityasbeingveryimportant(69%;Table1).Alloftheinfluencesofferedwereconsideredatleastsomewhatimportantbythemajorityofrespondents,buttheonemostlikelytobeconsiderednotatallimportantwascareerbenefits(8%;Table1).
