Click hereThird Ward Newsletter     October, 2011 In This IssueThird Ward UpdateEvents in and around thedraWImportantAnnouncementsThird Ward StarOctober CAPSDear Walter,It is fall in Chicago, which means pretty colors on the trees, Bearsfootball, and lots of raking leaves. Although the football seasoncould be going better, we decided to get a jump start on the fallseason with a Chicago Impact Day where several volunteersjoined me in raking, sweeping, and overall cleaning of variousparts of the Third Ward. Of course, these activities do not have to be limited to ImpactDays or Clean and Green Events. If you have a block club or agroup of volunteers who are willing to roll up their sleeves and dosome cleaning, the Department of Streets and Sanitation couldcertainly use the help and can provide you with the tools youneed to get the job done.Along with the other events throughout October, please check outHalloween in the Parks in the Third Ward for fun and safe (andsometimes spooky) events in our community. I hope everyonehas a great month and a happy Halloween.Sincerely,Full ViewPage 1 of 15

Located at 4501 S. Vincennes Ave., the ClassicalRevival-style building was built in 1899 as a synagogue by the area's then-German Jewish population.Originally known as Isaiah Temple, it was purchased by Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in 1921 toserve the area's growing African-American community. Under the direction of musical pioneer ProfessorThomas A. Dorsey and others, the church's gospel choir was significant in the emergence of a uniquely-American, 20th century musical style known as "gospel." The building is associated with the careers ofnoted gospel singers like Mahalia Jackson, Dinah Washington, Sallie Martin, and many others. Designed by prominent Chicago architect and acoustician Dankmar Adler, the building reflects ancientGreek and Roman architectural forms. Its masonry and limestone exterior is characterized by a pair ofsymmetrical facades facing Vincennes and 45th Street. Its interior is dominated by a barrel-vaultedauditorium with a horseshoe-shaped balcony. Click here for a complete history of Ebenezer MissionaryBaptist Church.  Special thanks to Reverend Marcel Kerr and the congregation at Ebenezer for putting forth the effort tomake this happen.  Submit your Ideas to Reduce Chicago's Budget DeficitThe City of Chicago is currently facing a $635.7 million budget shortfall. New Urban Partnership Bank Bronzeville LocationWilliam Farrow, President and CEO of Urban Partnership Bank, recently announced that the bank willopen a new retail branch in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood. The new location at 35th and SouthMichigan (101 E. 35th St.) is scheduled to open later this winter and will become Urban PartnershipBank's fourth new micro-branch in Chicago since the bank's inception a year ago. Nearing completionand getting ready to open in the fall are new Urban Partnership Bank micro-branches in the Loop,Austin, and Bellwood neighborhoods.  Urban Partnership Bank's purchase of the 1,100 square foot property, a former fast-food restaurant, contributes to the bank's larger strategy of creating a state-of-the art, full-service branch bankingnetwork to better serve its customers and communities. Construction of the new Urban PartnershipBank micro-branch and drive-up is already underway.  The new branch will offer a wide range of transactional services and credit products and will beequipped with the latest technologies like an image-taking deposit, 24/7 ATM to serve its customersmore effectively and efficiently. Located in a revitalized area where quality and affordable financialservices are scarce, it will also reach an underserved population that includes the growing number ofstudents and young adults who are entering the workforce, patrons of high-cost payday lenders andcurrency exchanges, and others currently without a banking relationship. The branch will be located across the street from the new Chicago Police Department headquarters andnear new stores and homes at 35th and State. Close by are IIT, U.S. Cellular Field, and the new Metrastop at 35th and Dearborn.
