San Clemente has a rich history in the region. Originally native people lived in the region, then Spanish settlers moved in to build the Mission San Juan Capistrano. Settlers built several small villages nearby, that eventually merged into one larger city. In 1925, the former mayor of Seattle, Ole Hanson, purchased and created a small community on 2000 acres of land. He wanted to offer a haven away from other busy California towns, with lovely beaches, warm climate, and fertile soil for growing plants and trees. His vision for his California coastal town was nicknamed, “San Clemente by the Sea”.
