Job Register - The Key To Astronomy Employment

Job Register Fee Change

The AAS Job Register has always had a 250 word limit per job announcement. This limit encourages the brief and informative description of jobs and greatly aids job seekers by limiting announcements to a reasonable length. In the past, we worked with institutions to edit their announcements to meet this limit, but this was always an inconvenience for both the AAS and the publishing institution.

Announcements beyond the 250 word limit can now appear, but will incur a $0.25 per word surcharge. It is understood that some announcements must be longer than 250 words and this fee was set low so as not to incur an undue financial penalty on these lengthy announcements.

The Job Register announcement base rate remains at a very low rate compared to comparable services provided by other professional societies. The AAS will continue to strive to maintain a low rate for the announcement of employment opportunities, which we feel is of significant benefit to the astronomical community and continues to secure the AAS Job Register's position as the number one source for astronomical employment opportunities.

Deadlines for submission

Job announcements may be submitted at any time and should be submitted well before the deadline so that any errors or difficulties can be resolved efficiently.

Job announcements must be received by the 15th and paid for by the 25th of each month for publication in the subsequent issue of theJob Register.

If payment is not received, then the announcement will not run in the next month's issue, but in the subsequent month's issue.We recommend that submission and payment be made well in advance of the monthly deadline.

Invery rarecircumstances a discount may be available for insitituions from developing countries. We also STRONGLY encourage employers to include in the postings information about benefits offered or to link to this information. This is especially important to clarify for post-doctoral or other non-permanent positions. We also encourage applicants to inquire and obtain a clear picture of the benefits at the time any offer is proffered.

Previously published position announcements may be re-published for additional months as long as the closing date is one month or more from the initial publication date of the job. AAS Postdoctoral Position Policy

The AAS Council has passed (1988) and reaffirmed (2003) a resolution stating that no postdoctoral position should require a candidate response prior to February 15 of each year. This policy applies to postdoctoral positions whose recruitment cycles follow the normal academic search timeline (offers in early spring to begin summer or fall of the same year). The text of this resolution is available on theCouncil Resolutionwebpage.

Employers should take this policy into account in their recruitment process.

The site is excellent for sub-mm observations, and the telescope is equipped with heterodyne receivers and bolometer arrays for observations at sub-mm wavelengths as well as in the THz band.

This position is initially funded by the ESO for a period of two years, and then will be extended as an indefinite appointment funded by the UCN. The extension of the term of the successful candidate is subject to adequate performance of responsibilities during the first two years. The applicants should hold a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics or related field and should have a postdoctoral experience. Researchers in any area of astrophysics will be considered. Native speakers or those having good command of Spanish are especially encouraged to apply. Meanwhile, a good knowledge of English language is assumed. Responsibilities of the successful candidate include the teaching of courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as the supervision of postgraduate students. The appointee will be able to apply for Chile's 10% share of telescope time for all observatories located in the country, including the largest of them, such as Paranal, Gemini, Magellan, etc. In addition, the facilities of the university observatory on Cerro Armazones, located not far from Paranal and operated by the IA, are available. KIAA's programs are focused on: a) particle cosmology, first light, galaxy assemblage; b) star/planet formation, interstellar/galactic medium; c) gravitational physics and high-energy phenomena. KIAA is intended to be an international center of excellence in astrophysics. Through workshops, thematic and visitors programs, KIAA promotes international collaboration with English as its working language. RANK: Chair Professor, Senior Research Scientist (tenure professor equivalent), and Members/Research Scientists (tenure-track faculty equivalent). Chaired professor shall be appointed on the basis of major scientific accomplishment or exceptional potential. Tenure faculty/KIAA senior research scientists will be selected based on their scientific leadership and original contribution. Tenure-track KIAA members/research scientists are open to junior candidates with established accomplishments and promising talents for an initial three-year term, renewable for a second term.

SALARY: depending on qualifications and experience. Members/Research Scientists may also be qualified for supplemental supports under the Beiren program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D., or equivalent, in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Sciences or related field completed or expected by effective date, a demonstrated record of research excellence and potential to obtain external funding. Candidates of all nationality are encouraged to apply.
