Harmonized Indices of Consumer Prices July 2001 The rate of inflation for the euro-zone*, as measured by the Monetary Union Index of Consumer Prices (MUICP), was 2.8% comparing July 2001 with July 2000. Euro-zone data up to end 2000 cover the eleven Member States; with Greece's entry into the euro-zone from the beginning of 2001, they cover the twelve Member States. The euro-zone is treated as an entity regardless of its composition. in focus The annual rate of change for the euro-zone fell from 3.0% in June to 2.8% in July 2001. A year ago, in July 2000, the corresponding rate was 2.3%. ECONOMY AND The rate of inflation in the EU, as measured by the European Index of FINANCE Consumer Prices (EICP=EU-15), decreased from 2.8% in June to 2.6% in July 2001. A year ago, in July 2000, the corresponding rate was 2.1%. THEME 2 - 29/2001 EU Member States with the lowest inflation rates in July 2001 were United Kingdom (1.4%), France (2.2%) and Denmark (2.3%). Highest inflation rates were reported for the Netherlands (5.2%), Portugal PRICES AND (4.3%) and Greece (4.2%). PURCHASING POWER PARITIES The annual rate of inflation for the European Economic Area (EEA) as a whole fell from 2.8% in June to 2.6% in July 2001. A year ago, in July 2000, the corresponding rate was 2.1%. The July annual rate of Contents change decreased from 1.6% to 1.4% in Switzerland** and from 3.2% to 2.7% in the USA**. (No July data available for Japan** when going to press).
