This figure represents a fur-110 ther fall of 927.000 jobs to add to the falls 100-seen in 1981 and 1982 which were also of the -100 order of one million persons. Thus 3 million "jobs" have disappeared in the space of 3 90- -90 years. 80- -80 On the other hand the working population,i.e. the sum of the employed and the unemployed continued to increase although at a reduced 70- -70 rate. The level recorded in 1983 was 118,9 million persons. 60- -60 This means that the number of persons unsuccessfully seeking work in the European Com-50 munity rose to 11,3 million in 1983, whereas JAP in 1980 the level was still only 6,5 millions 40- -40 By contrast employment grew by 1,3 million in 1983 in the United States and by 1,1 mil30- -30 lion in Japan, whilst the working population of the respective countries rose by 1,4 and 1,1 million. Longer term it is notable -20 20-that significant increases in working population in these two countries have been mat-10 10-ched to a greater extent by the creation of employment than has been the case in Europe where the working population has also risen.
