GESMES is an EDIFACT message which has been developed by Message Development Group 6
(Statistics) of the Western European EDIFACT Board (WE/EB MD6). The purpose of the
message is to allow the exchange of multi dimensional statistical arrays and time series data. In
fact, the message can be used to exchange many other types of tabular data and non statistical
organisations are encouraged to investigate the viability of using GESMES for the exchange of
such data.
WE/EB MD6 was launched at the offices of Eurostat in November 1989 and has the support of a
number of statistical organisations:

the EFTA countries have observer status

countries

The aim of thegroup is to act as the forum (within the WE/EB) for the harmonisation of EDIFACT
message development in the statistics sector, and to promote the use of EDIFACT messages for the
exchange of statistical information.
WE/EB MD6 comprises five sub groups as shown in the diagram below, each sub group is
responsible for the development of EDIFACT messages for a particular domain
