Executive Summary The State of Independence 2014report reveals for the first time the true impact the self-publishing movement is having on the book publishing industry.
While the self-publishing movement is currently totally transforming the whole publishing industry, outdated methods of measuring and analysing the book publishing market have led to a vast underestimation of the size, power and growth of self-publishing.
This report examines new data, from sources including Amazon and mainstream publishers, to give an entirely fresh perspective on the state of todays publishing industry.

Self-Publishing Authors Rule Self-publishing authors will greatly benefit from access to publishing professionals. Usage of these services would overcome the perceived deficiencies of many self-published titles. These services are also one of the major advantages currently held by mainstream publishers. The very ease of self-publishing will lead to more titles being available and greater choice for readers, which in turn will lead to greater competition for the hearts and minds of readers. Faced with this situation, self-publishing authors wishing to be commercially successful will need to treat their work not just as a book, but a
product to be marketed. It is likely, therefore, that what have been hitherto peripheral services such as marketing and advertisng will grow in demand and importance.
The greatest impact is that self-publishing authors will be able to be competitive with mainstream publishers.
Mainstream Publishers Hit a Wall Mainstream publishers will be faced with increasing competition from self-publishing authors, both from an increase in the number of self-publishing titles competing with their own titles, and downward pressure on book prices.
Unlike other industries, where consumers will buy based on a companys brand name, readers buy because of the author and the authors brand, not the publishers brand. Sales of J.K. Rowlings bookThe Cuckoos Calling,
published under the pseudonym Robert Galbaith, were lacklustre until it was revealed Rowling was the author. The title then immediately became a bestseller.
Authors now have a greater negotiation leverage than ever before and this will put further pressure on publishers revenues as established authors demand higher royalties and more favorable commercial arrangements.
Publishers also risk departures from their stable of moneymaking authors who may well take the self-
published route because of the much greater returns to be had.

Conclusion The very technologies which are driving the eBook revolution have the potential to disintermediate and undermine established publishers.
Authors are now capable of wielding an unprecedented power, both in terms of contract negotiation and as independent competitors in the marketplace. Likewise, publishing professionals now have the potential to challenge former employers by proactively stepping out on their own. The marketing and publishing expertise of mainstream publishers is no longer a monopoly.
On the horizon are new interactive book formats, potentially spurred on by a wider adoption of ePub 3. This will bring further opportunities and more structuring of the book publisher industry. Our next report examines how these new media formats will radically change the nature of books and converge with other media channels.
