It has been shown that the process is feasible and that existing commercial catalysts exhibit sufficient conversion activity in the short term. The reaction mechanism probably involves the sequential conversion . . ./ of high boiling materials to low boiling products by hydrocracking. The ease of removal of heteroatoms by hydrofining reactions decreases in the order sulphur, oxygen and nitrogen. The yield of low boiling distillates is enhanced by increasing severity of reaction conditions, i.e. higher temperatures and longer reaction times.
