"Disaster recovery is talked about everywhere, but only really implemented in one percent of the
IT world. InMage is destroying the excuses for all size shops, enabling everyone to protect
themselves just like the really big guys.“

The Old:
Costly, Hugge and Inflexible
BUT
DR Was Easy:
A single ‘centralised image’ in which the
operating system, the application, storage
and memory were tightly integrated.
Application and Transactional Consistency
were implied
The NewNew
Hundreds of disconnected servers
SAN = Storage has been ‘disconnected’ and
distributed
All ‘Peer to Peer’
Worse – Transactional Integrity issues
across composite applications

"We looked at outsourcing DR,“
"But . . . we can't compgpete against those with deeper ppockets. I'd rather
be the owner of my destiny."
At the time the firm began looking at disaster recovery, it was
struggling with an unreliable back up of 12TB per night including its
mission-critical Apps., including:
• Microsoft Exchange e-mail system, SharePoint, S Q. L, File & Print, etc.
“ Exchange backups were extending well into the business day"
“We needed something better”better”

Replicate any kind of data, be it :
• unstructured files, Exchange, SQL Server and even SharePoint
data.
Assign variable recovery-point objectives (RPO)
depending on thethe application.
• "We wanted to throttle up or down our overall RPO, based on the
system,“
• "F"For Exchange, we wanttedd essentialllly near-real-titime recovery, but
some of our other business systems that are SQL Server-based
don't require that. The RPO could be three hours. We wanted that
flexibility."
Bi-directional replication was key, too.
• "Replication going in one direction -- a lot of vendors do that,"
• "But you really need bi-directional, so that once the host site is up
and operational, you can replicate that information back from the DR
site to the main site. That was the riddle we wanted to solve, and
wewe wanted to dodo it as transparently as possiblepossible, "

Cheaper - Greener
Howard Rice had just moved to a new data center and standardized on
VMware, and builtbuilt it’sds disasterisaster-recovery site using onlyonly virtualized
servers.
"Virtualization lletet us reduce our overalloverall ccapitalapital iinvestmentnvestment in serverserver
hardware,"
“In fact, the new data center is about the
same size as the old one, but it offers 60%
more capacity because it requires fewer
servers to support the same number of
applications. PlusPlus, it's greener. WWe e're're
saving on power and cooling because
there are fewer servers, so there is less
heat outputoutput. WeWe wanted toto make suresure we
leveraged those gains at the DR site as
well,“

"In the past, recovery times were incredibly variable because we would
have ttoo ggoo ttoo tthehe offsite vvendorendor, getget the ttapesapes, and thatthat would ttakeake a
day,"
"And tthenhen we'dd need to getget the hardware toto restorerestore itit to, and onceonce wwe e
restored, we had to handle the configuration. Not only would we have
[operating system] configuration issues, but also application issues,
because iinevitablynevitably data wwouldould bbee rrestoredestored ttoo a server with a ddifferentifferent
name, and apps like SQL Server need to know this. It was a very
complex equation."
Today, however, recovery is nearly instantaneous.
“The data is already at our DR site and all we need to do is issue a few
commands to DR-Scout, to bring that data online,”
