Step 11: Wait
Now that you have your own web space in the internet world it will not immediately produce results. The best
to do now is wait for two to three months and let the search engines get you indexed. You can use this time
to continue and set up more and more links with related information to your site. By the time you have a
good linking system established you will find that the search engines will start to send you customers
interested in you service or product.

BANNERSThe first thing you need to do is decide if this is going to be a business or a personal web site. A personal
web site can be fairly easy. There are many hosting service that will handle the registration and they also BOOKS
have easy step by step software installed on their server to help you with building the site.
BROWSERS
CONNECTIONA personal site can be hosted for free usually with a advertisement banner across the top of the page. A
really neat site that offers the most web space for free I found was 0catch.com. They give you 100meg of CONTEST
web space. This is excellent for a personal site as it gives you plenty of room to place pictures and some e-COMMERCE
downloads. It will come with a site with "yourname.Ocatch.com". The servers there are very reliable and I
e-MAILhave experienced very little if any downtime to the sites I have there. They include a 3rd party web template
package that will walk you through building you first site very quickly. You can do like I did and spend hours FLASH
of research and come to this same conclusion. If you decide the latter I recommend going to American GRAPHICSTradur and look at creating free web sites section.
HOSTING
LINKINGA business site should be done with a lot of planning in advance. If the business is already has a real world
presence then you need to decide how to lay out the site to represent the existing clientele as well as the MARKETING
new ones from the WWW. If it is a new business then you have a chance now to start a firm foundation for a
MISCgreat future. The benefits of a internet business is that it can be run from anywhere in the world with the
internet access available today. A good example is the American TradUR. This started out as a home NAVIGATION
business but is presently growing well beyond the original expectations. For the past year the owner has PROTECTION
been living in Indonesia updating and handling business affairs from there. As with any business you need
REGISTERto have a plan for initial financing, record keeping, local and state laws, and an office.
SCRIPTS
If you are seriously starting a business for a product and do not have web design experience you should SEARCH
consider using a professional design service. You can normally get a website up and running for $500.00 or SOFTWAREless without the hassle of doing all the thinking. There are many out there but for service and price is the
RESOURCESAmerican TradUR Company Web Design. They are a full service company. They keep their prices lower by
using designers based all over the world. they work with each customer on all design requirements and are
more than willing to adjust the site for you long after it is in operation.

BANNERSFrom this point on I am going to assume that this is some sort of business. You need to do some research
on the WWW and find out who competes with your products or services. The best way to do this is to go to BOOKS
many different search engines and look for a description of your service or product. Start looking at the ones
BROWSERSthat come up in the first 5 listings. You will want to start making notes about how they got listed in your
results. Evaluate their page contruction, wording, links to them, and how they display the products or CONNECTION
services. CONTEST

BANNERSI prefer to design my own but you can find many ready to use graphics on the internet. Design an easy to
use interface for the site navigation or you can start with a template. If you chhose to use a pre made BOOKS
template you find many sources that already have the basic graphics and navigation set up for you. We BROWSERShave listed many sources of these here on our templates page for you. It is recommended that you use
CONNECTIONsoftware tools in the beginning. Two packages I presently use and have found to be excellent for building
web pages are Microsoft Front Page and Macromedia Flash. If you get more proficient you can easily modify CONTEST
most code from an editor as simple as notepad that is included with windows. What I do is create the meat e-COMMERCE
of the project using tools then tweak my result using notepad. Using most of the tools available today on the
e-MAILmarket it allows you to plan and organize a web project. As a business site it will probaly require you to
collect information from your customers. To do this you will need to run some server side scripts. FLASH
GRAPHICS
Organize Your site like you would a file drawer "I hope" If you organize the folders, for your site, before HOSTING
you begin creating your pages, then you will always be able to find your pages when you need them. LINKING
MARKETING1. Create folders for different types of files. If you are adding pictures to your site, you should have a
folder named something like "graphics" or "pictures. This is where you will always place your MISC
pictures. If you have some pages about you and others about your kids, create different folders to NAVIGATION
keep each in.
PROTECTION2. Name your pages and graphics in a way in which it will be easy to find them later. When you
have groups of pages or graphics that are similar, give them similar names. For instance, if you have REGISTER
a group of pages with stories about your vacation, start the name of each file with "vac". The file SCRIPTS
names could be: vacday1, vacrainyday.

SOFTWARE
Keep your graphics sizes small. Most graphic packages and photo editors allow you to save files
in different quality. It is wonderful to see your photos in high quality but if it takes too long on the RESOURCES
internet no one else will ever see them. When the pixel size of your graphics are too big, it takes too
long for your page to load.
Put large graphics on a separate page. Create a page especially for your large graphic. Link to it
from your page and label the link with something telling your readers that it will take a long time to
download. They will wait to see it if they are warned ahead of time. Use of a thumbnail is an option
