IPad oers chance to interact with and manipulate traditional text book content (science experiments on IPad). You can rotate cross sections of dissection images or three dimensional mathematical equations with an iPad that cannot be done with textbooks or their images. Can also include dietary applications for less traditional academic disciplines as well as use to setup fun activity (extracurricular) scheduling or study groups. There are also many GPS applications (potentially security related as well to keep track of school assets). One vision at Apple is to extend the phones ‘everyone has to a learning appliance.
Apple has seen some districts inadvertently cripple technology possibilities for 100% of its students in a eFor example one principal bannedort to curb risk of abuse by 1%. all cell phones (of any technology) on campus. So students check their phones at a kiosk ocampus during school day.The kiosk owner is making $1 per day per phone, and school/students are missing out on possible learning advantages which are possible on many of their phones.
Better approach is a Successful Omaha school which requires strict schedule and compliance to rules for freshmen, and oer exibility increasing with later years as responsibility is proven. This way technology access is a reward students want.Their desire to use technology motivates compliance to school policy.
The old (current) pattern of learning is to provide textual or lecture context and followup with multimedia for example using a Friday movie.New, modern pattern is to provide rich multimedia first (via technology devices) to spark desire to investigate and learn more, which might involve printed materials or wiki or interview investigations with experts or teachers.Collaboration is a key way to learn now, whereas previously collaboration was considered cheating.Have to get past teacher concerns around technology. Usethe minority of students in the class who know how to use technology to teach the majority of the students and even the teacher. The teacher does not have to be the expert anymore in the details of the material as much as be an expert in facilitating learning and finding the details for or with the students.Example video blogging 10 year old Sam Saper of Florida who advises a Florida University and is bored and can become a discipline problem in a traditional fifth grade classroom.
Asked how a single teacher eectively oers a smorgasbord of learning methods.
Teachers have to oer more than Google Assisted Memory (GAM) can ocaner. Kids get answers to pointed and specific questions trivially online.Teachers must move beyond and not only teach content but oer context which is much weaker in GAM. Teachers primary goal is even more to ‘help kids move from information to knowledge than it has ever been before. This is something that Google and technology are much less able to do.
We need people (students, graduates) who can think and come up with solutions using information and knowledge. Teach them how to think critically, solve problems,
communicate and collaborate. The role of the teacher is to create conditions for invention rather than provide ready-made knowledge.
ItunesU website hosts best teaching lessons for free and available for free download. All postings on ocial state websites are typically vetted for accuracy and quality. Open University in England, Arizona and Colorado all have sites.Colorados site is actually not live quite yet, expected by the end of 2010.
Resumes are being trumped as job application requirements by postings to utube which can better demonstrate qualifications.Utube is where Apple found one of the ideas for a recent television ad.Also there is a musician who oers song-a-day for $100 and uses his postings as his resume / qualifications.Entrepreneurial and a resume at the same time.
Need to shift schools to the collaboration model of utube to teach them how to work in teams to create a superior outcome.Web 2.0 where web is bidirectional (post and view). Applebundles base collaboration programs with their hardware to encourage this activity.Challenge is to shift teachers to a mode of education which teaches more than the foundation skills which are the target of traditional academic assessments and supplements them with skills to promote collaboration.

Continuum from Ipod to MacBook accommodates the continuum from Access to Create. Youcan achieve/integrate access at the Ipod price point, but need the higher price point of MacBook to achieve create level of integration.
