Molecular scale approaches to information processing devices, circuits and architectures
AnEmerging Nanoelectronicsinitiative is planned for call 3 of the IST 2004 work programme. It will address research work on molecular-scale approaches with promising potential for future information processing systems. It will cover three main areas of research. Hybrid molecular approaches aiming at exploiting the benefits of molecular-scale phenomena in the context of submicron semiconductor platforms; One-dimentional structures, aiming at developing functions based on the characteristics of nanotubes and nanowires, leading to new devices and connections; Advanced molecular approaches to information processing, using molecules as the core of information processing, and storage systems. Research will combine work on devices and corresponding architectures, and will include a combination of modeling, prototyping and characterisation.
Background information on the Emerging Nanoelectronics proactive initiative TheNanotechnology Information Devices (NID)is the current FP5 initiative on future information processing and storage nano-systems based on nanometer-scale concepts.
Three inter-related objectives were: To developnovel architecturesand designs for information processing systems adequate for nano-scale implementation; To developnovel devices: a logic gate, memory cell, or other elementary processor. Key issues are scalability, power consumption, and potential for room temperature operation; To develop tools and techniques for the fabricationof structures with critical dimensions around or below 10 nm. These combine surface patterning and nano-manipulation techniques with self-organisation and self-assembly concepts; Projects currently funded (FP5): 21 Projects resulted from 2 focused calls in 1999 and 2001; with an additional 16 projects arising from the open call. Total funding for these projects is above 50 M. The PHANTOMS Network of Excellence provides a platform for co-operation among NID and associated projects. www.phantomsnet.com A list of funded projects can be found at http://www.cordis.lu/ist/fet/nidsy.htm
