How to Organize and Back Up Your DataPLEASE NOTE: this tutorial is only for teachers with laptops that synchronize to the server. If your home folder on your computer just says “Faculty” then you only need to follow step 1 by connecting to the server and cleaning up your data. Your server folder will be moved for you to the new centralized storage system. Steps 5 and 6 are optional.STEP #1: CLEAN-UP & ORGANIZATION:Before you back any of your data you need to clean up and organize. This will help you weed out files you no longer need (saving space on the storage system) and make it simpler for you to get to the files you really need. You may be able to delete some of the older documents, half-started or half-finished iMovie projects (whichever way you want to look at it) and maybe some of those photos or songs you didn’t realize you had.STEP#2: CONNECT TO THE CENTRAL STORAGE SYSTEM:Before you start backing your information up, you should try to find a network cable to plug into and then reboot your laptop with the network cable plugged in. When plugged in your laptop can transfer data at up to 100Mb/s. When on wireless (for this year) you can transfer data at up to 54Mb/s. This can make a difference of minutes vs. hours when you back up your data, so please plan ahead. 2.Type afp://storage.orecity.k12.or.us in the Server Address box and click connect.
3.Enter your user name (last name_first name) and password, then click connect.
4.Select your building name from the list and click OK.

STEP#3: BACKINGUP YOUR HOME FOLDER 1.Click on My Hard Disk (your hard disk may have a different name) and double-click on the Users folder.Drag your home folder (with the house icon) into the shared folder you just connected to.(Leopard users will have similar steps)
2.Depending on how much data you have in your home folder, backing up your information can take anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours, so please be patient and let all of your files back up.You can even let it go overnight.
3.Youve backed up your home folder; good work!
STEP#4: DE-AUTHORIZE& BACK UP iTUNES (optional) If you authorized your computer so you could purchase content from the iTunes store youll need to de-authorize it before checking your laptop back in.
1. Tode-authorize a computer, choose Store> De-authorize Computer. 2. Tode-authorize a computer to play spoken programs purchased from the Audible website, choose Advanced> De-authorize Audible Account. 3. Ifyou forgot to de-authorize a computer you no longer own, you can de-authorize all your authorized computers at once. You can use this method once a year. a. ChooseStore> View My Account, and then click De-authorize All. If you don't see this option, it's because you don't have five authorized computers. 4.If you have purchased content on iTunes you should back up your library to CD or DVD for an easy restore. a. STEP#5: EXPORTSAFARI & FIREFOX BOOKMARKS (optional) If you want to be doubly sure you have all of your favorite Internet bookmarks backed up (we wont take it personally if you want more than one backup!) then follow these steps:
FOR SAFARI: 1.Open Safari and click File --> Export Bookmarks
2.Choose a location to save your bookmarks (remember to copy them to the central storage system after you export them!).

FOR FIREFOX: 1.Open FireFox and click Bookmarks on the menu at the top of the screen, then click Organize Bookmarks.
2.Once the Bookmark Manager opens up, click File at the top of the screen and then click on Export.
3.Choose a location to save your bookmarks (remember to copy them to the central storage system after you export them!).
Step#6: VERIFYTHAT YOU ARE BACKED UP! Please verify that the folders you copied made it to where you thought you copied them. Youcan click on the shared folder you connected to in step #2 and see your files.
