ENTERING NOTES
HYPERSCRIBE

. . . is the quickest way to enter notes into finale if you are familiar with the piano keyboard. Hyperscribe
notates while you play. Because MIDI is a very precise, it is best to setup Finale 2004 exactly the way
you want it to prevent errors. To set up Hyperscribe correctly you will have to go through two different
phases.

Phase 1
1. Select Hyperscribe by clicking on the Hyperscribe button or by selecting Hyperscribe from
the Tools menu> Hyperscribe.
2. Go to the Hyperscribe menu> Beat Source> Playback and/or Click.

3. In the “Playback and/or Click” Box select your beat note, and tempo. If your piece is in a
compound meter your beat note should be a dotted quarter note.
Tip: It is always a good idea to go a little slower than you might normally play to minimize the
number of mistakes.

4. Click the "Click and Countoff" box.
5. In the “Click and Countoff” box, select "Always" from both the "Countoff" option and the "Click"
Option.
6. Enter the number of measures you would like for a countoff in the “Measures” box and click OK.

Phase 2
We will change the sensitivity of Hyperscribe so that Finale 2004 does not notate when you play
slightly off of the beat.
1. Go to the Hyperscribe Menu> Hyperscribe Options / Quant Settings.
2. Click the smallest note value you have in your music under the “Smallest Note Value” heading.
3. Click “Mix Rhythms” if your piece has both duplet and triplet figures.

4. Click More Settings.
5. Click in the “Minimize Number of Rests” box if the box is not already checked.
6. Click OK three times.

Now you are ready to play the music into Finale 2004.
1. Click the mouse in the first measure you wish to begin recording.
2. You will get a countoff of the number of measures you selected.
3. Now play the notes on the MIDI keyboard.
4. When you are finished Hyperscribing click outside the staff to stop the metronome.
5. Make sure you read the section on formatting so you put each voice in the correct layer.

If you make a mistake you do not have to record the all of your work over. Just click in the measure in
which you made the mistake and start recording from that point on. Or you can use the simple entry
method which will be discussed next.
