Steps to access VPN for Students

1.

Open your internet browser and enter the address that corresponds to your institution

listed below:

OSUN -

https://vpn1.newark.ohio-state.edu/osunstudent

COTC -

A security alert may come up stating about exchanging information with others. Select

Yes

to continue.

3.

A second security alert will display asking to accept the certificate from F5 Networks.

Select

Yes

to continue.

4.

A hostname mismatch may pop up stating that the server name in the certificate does not

match the actual name of the server. Select

Yes

to continue.

5.

A warning may display asking to trust the signed applet from F5 Networks. Select

Yes

to

continue.

6.

Web controls will automatically be installed, followed by a check for a virus scanner.

Once the check is done, a choice will be given whether or not to scan the active processes

for viruses.

If running firepass for the first time, select “

Scan active processes for

viruses.”

7.

A login page will display asking for your username and password. The account will be

the same use to login to the network in a computer open lab. If you do not know your

username and password, check with a lab monitor in a campus lab or call the Help Desk

at 740-366-9244 (evening hours, 740-364-9568). Click

Logon

after entering your

information.

8.

After logging in, an attention page may display stating that the browser is configured to

block pop-ups.

Follow the directions given and use the address from step 1 to add to the

exceptions list.

Once the exception is added to the list, the information will not be

requested for future sessions.

9.

Click on the link to restart the pop-up window.

10.

If prompted to install

cachecleaner.cab

, select

Install

.

11.

The browser should open the portal to Firepass displaying options including Network

Access, Webmail, Campus Connect (COTC only), Financial Aid, Newark Campus

Library and the specific network drives that you can access.

12.

Select

Logout

in the top right-hand corner to exit Firepass.

Methods to access network drives via Firepass

There are two ways to access network drives in Firepass. One is to map the drives to the local

computer using Network Access. The other is to open the network drives within the Firepass web

portal using Windows Files. If the Internet connection is slower (i.e Dial-up), the preferred

method would be Windows Files.

H: drive

- your personal drive.

This space is a secured work area accessible only by you.

You will be able to access it regardless to where you are, on or off campus, as long as

you have access to the Internet.

S: drive

- for COTC AutoCAD students only.

U: drive

- a common student drive.

Any files you save here will be accessible to all

other students.

This area is offered strictly as a convenience for students collaborating on

common projects.

Please use caution when using this drive.

All students have access to

the files and they can be added, edited, or deleted by any other student.

It is

recommended if you use this space for collaborative efforts, you should save any updated

versions of a file on your personal drive (H:) as well.

By doing so if someone

inadvertently alters or deletes the file you will still have another copy saved in your

secured personal drive (H:).

A.

Network Access

1.

After logging into Firepass, select the link under Network Access.

2.

If prompted to install

urxshost.cab

, select

Install

.

3.

After the install, a small window will pop up and will display the status of the connecting of

network drives.

A security alert will then pop up asking to accept the certificate, select

Yes

.

4.

Once the drives are connected, a yellow status box will appear in the lower right of the

screen. Close the status box.

5.

Minimize all browser windows and open My Computer to access the network drives. DO

NOT CLOSE THE BROWSER WINDOWS! Closing them may abruptly close access to the

network files.

6.

When done, open the browser window and select

Logout

in the upper right of the screen to

exit Firepass.

B.

Web Applications

1.

The web applications section lists several links to various web sites and services for your

convenience.

Additionally, a COTC student will have access to Campus Connect

through the VPN service.

Another important link is to a service that has previously been

limited in its functionality from an off-campus location.

This link is to the Newark

Campus Library.

By using the VPN link, you will have access to the library databases in

the same way you would if you were in the campus library.

This is a major step in

maximizing accessibility for our students remotely should they need to complete a

research assignment off the Newark Campus.

Windows Files

1.

After logging into Firepass, select the drive to access under Windows Files.

As on

campus computers, H: is meant for your personal network files and U: is a student

common drive which all students have access.

2.

Once a drive link is selected, a two-pane window will open. The left pane displaying the

contents of the drive. The right pane displays several options including

uploading/downloading files and creating new folders.

3.

To open a file, click the file name. A new pane will display on the right, giving several

options including loading file in browser and saving to local computer. Left-click

Load

into browser

to open the file. To save the file, right-click

Load into browser

and select

Save Target As

.

4.

To return to main page, select

usernames’s home

in the top left-hand corner where

username

is your username.

5.

To logout, select the

Logout

option in the top right-hand corner.
