is35/is40/is50/i40M Load one Style and managing styles Tutorial
Step-by-step tutorial on how to manage your user styles.
The Scenario
An end user has bought or found on the Internet, some i-series styles.
When loading in the styles, the end
user quickly finds that he/she does not want all of the styles.
Rather the end user would like to move the
styles around to make a “Best Of” disk, containing the styles that are useful.
The end user quickly finds out
that loading in a new set, always wipes out the old set.
How does one keep user styles in the Korg unit and
then load in more user styles?
How does one make a “Best of” disk with only the styles needed and wanted
for a gig?
The Answer
One must get to know and use the Load One function.
There is no way to load in a complete set of styles
into the is35/40/50 or i40M and then move these styles.
One must load the styles in one at a time to specify
their location in Disk/Global mode.
In this example, let us underline that the end user has 2 disks.
One disk named “Funk” has 8 new
styles and arrangements.
Using “LOAD ALL” put these styles and arrangements into U11 to U18.
The next disk named “R&B” has 8 new styles and arrangements whose destinations are the same as
the Funk set (U11 to U18 for styles and arrangements).
In this example, we would like to have the
first set “Funk” styles and arrangement loaded into U11 to U18, and the second set “R&B” styles and
arrangements loaded into U21 to U28.
We will then save this set-up so all styles and arrangement
can load in one shot using “LOAD all”.
Since you have loaded in your new styles from the example above, and of course wish to proceed, you must
first jot down on a piece a paper the:
Names of the arrangement from the set(s) you have loaded
Where the arrangement is located (U11 or whatever)
The style’s name and location the arrangement is using.
In order to find out this information, use the page
+ button to find the STY page.
This information is crucial to understanding and managing your styles and arrangements.
Procedure
1. Insert the Funk disk.
Push the Disk/Global button on your Korg unit
2. Highlight <LOAD> then push the YES/Enter button
NOTE:
use the cursor keys
<Cursor>
to change selections.
When you have highlighted an item, it will
flash.
3. Highlight <ALL> then push the YES/Enter button
4. Highlight <ALL> again then push the YES/Enter button
5. Wait a moment will appear on the screen, then a file name like
FUNK
(Yes)
If you do no see the Funk filename, use the -/+ buttons until you do.
Please see the end of this document is
you encounter DIR
6. Push the Yes button.
“Now loading” will appear
Do not worry is you see “File Missing” or something like this on the screen after loading.
This is just your
model’s way of ignoring any extra data that the unit does not recognized.
Go to Arr. Play mode, user bank,
and you will see the new styles/arrangements
Now in order to load in the next 8 styles/arrangements one MUST use the load one option.
7. Insert the R&B disk.
Push the Disk/Global button
8. Highlight <LOAD> then push the Yes/Enter button
9. Use the cursor keys now to highlight <ONE> then push YES/Enter
10. Highlight <STY> then push the YES/Enter button
11. Push the -/+ buttons until you screen reads
R&B
U11 -> U11
We need to clarify what this display means.
To the left is the file folder name, in this case R&B.
The first
number is where the file would be if it were loaded in with LOAD All.
The number to the right is the
destination or where we want this file to go.
Remember in our example above, the second disk contained 8
styles/arrangements that were loaded into U11 to U18.
We want to load U11 into U21, U12 to 22 and etc.
So in order to load what was U11 into U21 our display must read as follows
R&B
U11 -> U21
This now means that the style that would have automatically been placed in U11 is to be loaded into the
U21 destination.
12. Once your display reads as above, push the YES/Enter button
13. Repeat the process for the other 7 styles.
Here is a run down of how the display will change.
R&B
U12 -> U22
R&B
U13 -> U23
R&B
U14 -> U24
R&B
U15 -> U25
R&B
U16 -> U26
R&B
U17 -> U27
R&B
U18 -> U28
Now you have loaded the 8 other styles into 8 new locations.
We must repeat this process for the
arrangements.
14. Push the Disk/Global button
15. Highlight <LOAD> then push the Yes/Enter button
16. Use the cursor keys now to highlight <ONE> then push YES/Enter
17. Highlight <ARR> then push the YES/Enter button
18. Push the -/+ buttons until you screen reads
R&B
U11 -> U11
Of course we will have to change these parameters just like we did with the styles.
So repeat this process 8
times as follows.
R&B
U11 -> U21
R&B
U12 -> U22
R&B
U13 -> U23
R&B
U14 -> U24
R&B
U15 -> U25
R&B
U16 -> U26
R&B
U17 -> U27
R&B
U18 -> U28
Now you have 16 styles and arrangements in their appropriated places.
But the new 21 to 28 arrangements
are pointing to styles U11-18, which are your Funk styles.
To change, simply go to Arr.Play mode and
select Arrangement 21.
Push the page + button until you see the style tagged to this arrangement.
STY:
U11 Funk1
Change this to:
STY:
U21 R&B.
Now write the arrangement.
Use the Page + buttons until you see “Write Arrangement”.
Push the YES/Enter button.
Repeat for arrangements 22 to 28.
Now you should save all the work you have done.
To save, simply insert a blank formatted 3-½ HD disk.
1. Push the Disk/Global button
2. Highlight <SAVE> then push the YES/Enter button
3. Highlight <ALL>, name your file and then push YES/Enter
A note about the DIR
command
Sometimes, a set is saved on another I-series keyboard other than the model you may have.
It is also
possible that an end user used a computer or did not correctly set up the diskette to follow the above
instruction to the letter.
One may encounter a DIR
on the screen.
This simply stands for directory up, or
in other words, one must open another folder to get to the end objective.
This is the same as the i30 and
Pa80’s open command (see tutorial on
Korg File Systems and Icons
and
Pa80/i30 New Styles
Loading/Saving
at
http://www.korgcanada.com/KorgCanada/Tutorials.htm
)
If you need to go up a directory or open a folder (both mean the same), then when seeing the DIR
on
screen, push Up/+ button.
Now one has opened the folder.
To find the files one is looking for, use the -/+
buttons.
Memory Full messages
If one encounters any error messages about memory or style memory being full, then one should first wipe
out the style memory onboard your Korg unit before proceeding to load in the new styles.

Operating system upgrades
Please make sure you have the latest operating system for your Korg product.
If you encounter any
problems with this step-by-step tutorial, an old operating system is the likely cause.
