Mobile Messaging | Student Tutorial Mobile Messaging provides an easy and effective way for students, faculty and staff to communicate, send and receive important information and stay connected. Through Mobile Messaging, emergency alerts, can be delivered to mobile phones via SMS text messaging and to your email. Don't forget to opt in to SHU broadcasts from the South Orange campus. You can receive up to the minute weather related information about the South Orange campus. To enable Mobile Messaging: 1. Simply login to MyWeb@SHU(Blackboard) 2. Click on the link located at the bottom of the Left-hand Tools menu. 3. In order to begin using Mobile Messaging, enter your name, mobile phone number, mobile carrier and gender. Then, click the “Next” button. 4. You will be notified that your account has been enabled. Click on the “Enter clearTXT” button to return to the clearTXT main page. Mobile Messaging provides an easy and effective way for students, faculty and staff to communicate,
send and receive important information and stay connected. Through Mobile Messaging, emergency
alerts, can be delivered to mobile phones via SMS text messaging and to your email.

To enable Mobile Messaging:
1. Simply login to MyWeb@SHU(Blackboard)
2. Click on the link located at the bottom of the Left-hand Tools menu.
3. In order to begin using Mobile Messaging, enter your name, mobile phone number, mobile carrier
and gender. Then, click the “Next” button.


4. You will be notified that your account has been enabled. Click on the “Enter clearTXT” button to
return to the clearTXT main page.

















Opt in to receive SHU Broadcasts:

1. From the home page within Mobile Messaging click on Channels, than click on groups.


2. Locate the section labeled Groups to which you subscribe. Locate SHU Broadcast and click
on More Options


3. Opt in to receive SHU Broadcasts by selecting Email and Text Message. Than Save Changes




From the home page within Mobile Messaging you can view recently sent and reviewed messages, create
messages and groups, adjust your profile, or manage your channels. Managing your channels allows you
to set preferences for both courses and groups you are enrolled in.

To view your courses, click on Channels, than click on Courses. Click on “Messaging Preferences” to
manage each course’s preferences.
1. Use the check boxes to select which type of messages you would like to receive and the format in
which you would like to receive them. Once you have set your preferences, click the “Save
Updates” button. Repeat this step for reach of the courses you are enrolled in. Groups

Mobile Messaging provides people the ability to create groups, invite people to join groups, and send and
receive group messages. Groups can be public or private. Public groups are visible and open to anyone
at your school. Private groups can be accessed by invitation only.

Public groups – all public groups are listed on the Find a Group page. To access this page, click the Find
Group button on the Home page or click the Channels tab, then click the Find a Group link in the
sub-navigation bar. You can search for groups using the search box at the top of the page, or browse
through the list. When you find a group you wish to join, just click the Subscribe link. If you received an
invitation to join a group, please follow the directions in the Private groups section (below).

Private groups – to join a private group, you must receive an email invitation from the group manager.
Each invitation includes a unique Invitation Code. Once an invitation has been received follow these
steps
1. Simply login to MyWeb@SHU(Blackboard)
2. Click on the link located at the bottom of the Left-hand Tools menu.
3. Click the Find / Join Group button on the Home page
4. Enter the Invitation Code into the invitation code box
5. That’s it!
















Creating Groups

Mobile Messaging lets you create groups and invite people to join your groups. To create a group,
follow these steps:
1. Click the Channels tab
2. Click the Groups link on the left side of the page
3. Click the Create Group button
4. Enter group information
5. ate button












Inviting People to Join Groups

You can send personal invitation for people to join both public and private groups. To send an invitation:
1. Click the Channels tab
2. Click the Groups link on the left side of the page
3. Determine which group you want people to join and click the Manage Group link next to that group
4. Click the Invite Users link – the invitation system will appear
5. Enter the email address of the people you wish to invite to join your group in the Recipient field.
You may add multiple email addresses – separate each email address with a comma
6. You may include a Custom Welcome message (optional)
7. Click the Send Invitation button. Each recipient will receive an invitation via email that includes the
login instructions and a customer Invitation Code. This code gives people simple and direct
access to join your group (see the Joining Groups sections).




Send Messages

Mobile Messaging enables the sending of many different types of messages. To send a message from
this page, follow these steps…
• Click the Create Message tab
• Step 1 – type the title and message you wish to send
• Step 2 – select the recipients
o Select the “Send to a group or course” option and then select the group(s) to receive your
message
• Step 3 – schedule the message
o To send a message immediately, select the Send immediately option o To send a message at a specific day and time, select the Send at this time option
o To send a message on a recurring basis (e.g., every Tuesday at 3:00 pm), select the
Send on a recurring basis option
• Click the Send Message button, and your message will be sent

Opt-out of groups

You can opt-in and opt-out of messaging at any time. To opt out of groups, follow these steps…
1. From the home page within Mobile Messaging click on Channels.


2. Locate the course, group or RSS Feeds and select the area you would like to opt out and click on
More Options.
3. Make the appropriate changes and click on save changes. Alternatively, you can change your
delivery settings - for example, you can have messages delivered to just your email or desktop,
rather than your mobile phone.

RSS Feeds
RSS (Real Simple Syndication) is a web-based format that is used to publish frequently updated content
such as podcasts and news stories. Mobile Messaging allows users to sign up for RSS feeds and receive
notification you of changes on your RSS feeds.

To add a RSS Feed to your Mobile Messaging page:
1. Begin at the Channels tab and select RSS Feeds from the blue box on the left.
2. The page will look like this. Type in the Feed Title, URL, and Description.
3. Click Add RSS Feed.

To manage your RSS feeds:
1. Begin at the Channels tab and click on RSS Feeds
2. Select Manage Feed next to the Feed you wish to set preferences for.
3. Select your preferences using the checkboxes.
4. Click Submit Changes to save your settings.
