Part 1: Exploring the Phonics Sort Activity
In the Phonics Sort activity, students complete phonics activities by sorting words onto a word wall (a grid). Words are sorted based on common word families, also known as chunks or rimes. Students should focus on the ending sound of each word (also known as the rime, word family, or chunk). Opening Phonics Sort 1. Sign in toClassroom Suiteas a Teacher (see Getting Started in theClassroom Suitebinder). The Navigation Screen displays. 2. Click the New button, if it is not already selected. Open the Language Arts Templates folder. 3. Open the Phonics folder and open Phonics Sort. The Phonics Sort activity displays.
Exploring the Phonics Sort Activity The opening page of Phonics Sort includes a 4x4 grid for holding graphics, a selection of rimes above the grid, and a “magic mirror” on the left. The toolbar at the top of the page contains a word box, navigation buttons, and a set of tools for students. 1. Click the green Directions button to hear the instructions read aloud. 2. Click the head of each column to hear its rime read aloud. 3. Click the Word Box button. This will place a picture on the screen and say the word that the picture represents. 4. Use the mouse (or the arrow keys on the overlay or keyboard) to move the picture into the column that matches that word’s ending sound, or rime. 5. Notice the “magic mirror” at the left of the page. Move a picture into this mirror and the word it rep-resents will appear below the mirror, helping stu-dents decide in which column to place the picture. 6. Phonics Sort is a 4-page activity. Press the pink Page buttons at the top of the screen to move through the other pages of this activity. 7. Close the activity without saving it. In the next part of this tutorial, you will learn to use the Phonics Template to create additional phonics activities.
