Copyright notices are found everywhere, from websites and blogs to movies, music and other creative expressions of ideas.
A copyright notice is asimple and short line of text that lets the world know that your work is yoursand is not to be copied. It offers legal protection against infringement.
Copyright laws happen automatically. You do not need to register your copyright to be protected.
However, registering comes with some benefits including the ability to bring a lawsuit against anyone who infringes upon your copyright.
Benefits of having a copyright notice include:
People being put onnotice that your work is yoursand subject to copyright,
Moremerit in a lawsuitif you need to prove that notice was given that your work is yours,
Deterring infringementand plagiarism, and
The ability to declare which rights you wantto keep
What is Copyrightable?
Any original work that you author or create can be copyrighted including computer software, music, websites, art and other tangible creative creations.
Ideas cannot be copyrighted, but personal and unique expressions of ideas can be.
Writing a Copyright Notice
There are4 componentsin every copyright notice and they go in order in the notice as follows:

A date
The author’s name

Copyright Symbol
The letter C in a circle is universally accepted as the symbol for copyright. You can also use the word copyright, or a combination of both.

Copyright Date
This is the year that your work gets released into the public. Not the year you create it.
Don’t use months or days. Just a year.

Copyright Date
If you have something like a blog or website that keeps old content alongside new content, you can use a range of years to protect material from the beginning until the present.

Author’s Name
This can be an individual’s name, multiple individuals, or the name of a business or organization. It should identify to people who holds the copyright on the material.
