Don’t drive…A car logo from 5000 beer corks About rotating masks and cells A three‐dimensional effect is a combination of several settings: 3D shadow, 32Bit Overlay mask and rotating masks and cells. The use of masks and 3D shadow is explained in other tutorials, here we focus on effectively applying an additional random effect by rotating the picture in each cell. The cell rotation is set by checking the box ‘Cell rotate’. Rotating cells require also rotating masks when applied. If a mask is rotated, parts of the rotated cell is cut off, because the circle diameter is smaller than the diagonal dimension of the mask. As a consequence only masks that can fully rotate within the circle of rotation can be used. The picture on the right explains this: ‐ the top picture shows a rotated mask where some parts are cut off by the rotation (outside the blue square). ‐ the bottom picture has a good fit inside the blue square when it is rotated. Thechosenfolderisnowscannedandanalyzedforsize.Afterthisprocesshasfinishedyoucanseethesizesummaryinthesametab.Ourresultnowreads:minimumsize90x48pxandmaximumsize90x90px.So,theintendedsizeof96x96pxisabittoohigh.Wetakeariskbyselectingacellsizeof72x72px,butwe’llsee.Step2:setthebasicsettingsWewillfirstsetafewbasicsettingstoquicklyseetheeffect.Thistutorialwouldbeveryshortifwedirectlyshowallthesettings,butwewouldliketoexplainwhywedothisandwhattheeffectisofachange.Ansimilar(butalternative)approachisexplainedinthetutorialCoinsonabanknote.Therenderingresultafterselectingthe32Bitoverlaymask(o32_BeerCork)isshownbelow(justthemaskhasbeenselected–allothersettingsremaindefault,e.g.cellsize32x32px).

Thisisofcoursenottheresultwehaveinmind.Sowechangethefollowingsettings:‐backgroundcolorsettoblack(andalsoactivatedbytickingitscheckbox)‐checktheboxesforRandombuildandRandompattern(tabSpecial)ThenpresstheCreatebutton.

Theresultisnowmorerandom,andthedetailsofthemosaiccanbeseen.Weneedtoincreasetheamountofrandomlyplacedbeercorks.So,weincreasetheAmountofrandomcells.

Nowtheeffectisgoodenoughandtheamountofbeercorksseemsalrightaswell(69Hx65V).

Step3:tunethe3DeffectintoarealisticphotoNearphoto‐realisticpicturesareusuallyachievedbyaddingalightsourcethatcreatesashadow.Thereforeweapplyashadowtoeachcell.Usethe3D‐effectShadowandsettheshadeparameterstodepth=30%,Intensity=40%enSizeis5southandeast.Next,alsoincreasethecellsizeto48x48px.

Information:ifthecellsizeischanged(from32x32px)to96x96theamountofcellsdramaticallydropsandthelogoisnotverywellrecognizedandtheAmount(ofrandomcells)needtobeincreasedaswell.So,theamountofrenderingtimewillsharplyincrease.ItisrecommendedtousethePreviewbuttontoevaluateachangeofsetting.The3Dshadoweffectlooksfine,butwe’llneedatadmorerealismsowemodifytheshadetoasharpereffect:depth=20%,Intensity=50%enSizeis3pxsouthandeast.

Step4:rotatethemaskandcellsWenowhaveagoodshadowandagoodamountofcells.Beforewemakethefinalrendering,wefirstwanttoaddanextsteptorealism:randomlyrotatedbeer‐corks.ThissettingisfoundinthetabQuicksettings|Othersettings.Withversion7.0.33ofMosaizerProthecellscanberotatedwitharotatingmask.Todothis,simplytickthecheckboxesCellrotateandMaskrotateandchoosetheminimumandmaximumrotationangles.Information:theminimumrotationangleismeasuredanti‐clockwiseindegrees.Themaximumangleismeasuredclockwise.It’snousetogobeyond+/‐180degrees,sincethiswillleadtoafullcirclerotation.WhenMaskrotationisusedwithCellrotation,theMaskresizedoesnotworkforthecells,butjustforthemask.Weselectedanglesbetween‐180and180degreestohaveafull360degreescellrotation.Theresultisshownbelow.Nowisseemsthatthebeer‐corksare‘thrown’onasurfaceinapatternshapeofthecarlogo.

Step5:finaltuningofsizeandamountTofinalizethis3Dpicture,weneedtotunethecell‐sizeandlogorecognitionagain.Instep3wehaveincreasedthesizeofthecell,withoutacorrespondingincreaseoftheamountof(randomlyplaced)cells.Thisisthereasonforalessrecognizablecarlogo.Tofindthepropervalues,rememberthatagoodreadabilitywasachievedwith69x65cellsinthehorizontalandverticaldirection(resultofstep2).Wewillincreasethecellsizetoourintended72x72px,thepapersizetoA1andthedensityto175dpi.Nowtheamountofcellsinhorizontalandverticaldirectionisaboutthesame(73Hand69H).

Thesettingswillvarypersourcepictureofcourse.Whenfollowingthistutorialwithadifferentsourcepictureyou’llprobablyneedtotunetodifferentsizes.Theresultisnowamazinglyrealistic:wellrecognizableindividualcells(72pxisquitegood),thelogoisrecognizedverywellandthe3Deffectisnearlyasrealisticasourbrainbelieves.
