What is Spotify'

Stockholm's Spotify music service has taken Europe by storm

since its launch in October 2008, garnering more than 2 million

subscribers in less than a year. It offers an interesting mix of

features for its subscribers, including:

' More than 4.5 million tracks available for online

streaming. Spotify has negotiated deals with most music

labels that allow it to legally stream their catalogs to customers

running Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux on PCs, as well as to

Android phones and Apple iPhones. Users can create their own

playlists from 4.5 million tracks and share them easily with other

Spotify subscribers, allowing the service to grow virally.

' Peer-to-peer (P2P) distribution from caches. Each client

caches songs as they are streamed and can redistribute those

songs to other subscribers as needed. Users typically configure

their PC caches to be 1 GB or more in size. The caches are

protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM), and the music

in those caches cannot be played outside of Spotify.

' Free and premium subscription business models. A free

version of the service is available in Norway, Sweden, Finland,
