SUMMARY
From a small engineering consulting company to a European Group.
Our company’s growth as told by two of our oldest agapians, who were there in the beginning in Portugal. A look back at the îrst 15 years of this professional and personal experience.
“I remember my îrst interview for agap2 in 2005, in a small ofîce in an old building in the middle of Lisbon... My îrst impressions were mixed, but I loved how I was welcomed and their desire to support me.
For 15 years, I have watched the company grow, and I’ve been there through all the good (and not-so-good) times. The company’s ability to unite is really amazing. The workforce and the employees’ wor-king conditions and environment have changed a lot, but the changes have always been well thought out. agap2 is like one big family and I’ve always felt that I could express myself. Relationships between em-ployees and management are very important. I hope that the company continues to grow sustainably, as it always has done, and that it conti-nues to provide all its employees with truly unique experiences.”
Carlos V. Project Manager for agap2 IT Portugal for 15 years
“In the beginning the company was really small here in Portugal. We all knew each other really well since there was only a few of us, but I qui-ckly realised that the aim was to grow. We were united around achie-ving this goal, and we still are, 15 years later, despite recent difîculties.
I’m still here because I get to work on interesting, and above all, varied projects. I work with friendly people who want to make sure their pro-jects are a success. And I never had to sacriîce my personal life as I’ve always been able to achieve a good work-life balance. At the moment, I’m enjoying working on a digital transformation project for the HIQ Consulting group. I hope that I continue to have the opportunity to work on new projects and to enjoy what I do – that’s what everyone wants.”

The Stockholm ofîce celebrates its third anniversary!
“I joined agap2 in 2015, and went straight into an ofîce that was just starting out, Grenoble. It was the perfect place to start out as I was surrounded by a handful of com-mitted, ambitious and fun people. I developed my activities until March 2018, then one day I was asked to help develop the company in a brand-new country: Sweden. I wanted to take on the challenge because I loved my job, the group’s DNA, and I knew that it was the perfect time for me to fulîl my dream of living abroad. It was just perfect!
Since 2017 we have been developing agap2 Life Sciences in Stockholm. We specialise in the pharmaceutical, bio-technological and MedTech industry. It’s a market with a lot of potential. After spending time restructuring, reecting and adapting, agap2 Stockholm is now moving forward positively. We have built up our client image as a brand specialising in the health sector and work like a start-up,
A new website for agap2 France
September will mark the culmination of a great project for agap2 France as we launch a new website that has been redesigned and thought up to correspond to the realities of today’s market. The website will shine the spotlight on our professions, our projects and our employees, enabling us to establish our position with candidates.
As well as providing an original and interactive user ex-perience, the website will also reveal our new corporate identity. Our aim was to put the engineering profession at the heart of our communication, by demonstrating the essential role it plays in building and developing our wor-ld – something which is reected in agap2’s new slogan: Think2morrow. After all, what would the world be without engineers?

getting our clients involved in agap2’s everyday life as much as possible.
Today we have a total of 20 employees, but hope to have a team of around 30 agapians by the end of 2020, which will make us pretty unique in terms of engineering consultancy specialising in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and Me-dTech industries. Not bad for just 3 years! Personally, I’m really proud of every member of our team and our ofîce’s success is down to them. So, thank you team!”

Using the Earth’s energy to heat and cool buildings
The naturally-occurring heat stored in our planet’s subsoil is a tremendous source of energy. Although it receives less media coverage than solar, wind and biomass energy, geothermal energy offers real advantages in terms of energy efîciency, reliability and environmental protection. After gaining experience in HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) in Qatar and Lebanon, Joe is now putting his expertise to use at Celsius Energy™, a start-up that de-signs and manufactures custom-made geothermal installations to heat and cool commercial and collective buildings.
90% less CO2 emissions per kWh Unlike solar and wind power, geother-mal energy is continuous, and clean since there is no waste to be stored and very little CO2 emissions. It can heat and air-condition buildings year-round, regardless of outdoor weather condi-tions. Celsius’ geothermal solution can reduce a building’s carbon footprint ten-fold and slash CO2 emissions per kWh by 90% compared to France’s current leader (gas and refrigeration units). Cel-sius also solves other problems related to air-conditioning because aerothermal systems release signiîcant heat into the surrounding environment. According to experts, “If everyone used air-conditio-ning, we would see a 3°C increase on the streets of Paris”. Celsius captures the heat released by buildings as they are cooled in summer and stores it under-ground – providing energy for heating in winter.
A unique slant drilling technique for urban areas
agaptualité|n°27 | September 2020
The system that I’m working on consists of a star-shaped closed-loop earth tube to exchange heat with the ground. Sensors are placed up to 200 m below ground and are linked to a heat pump at the surface so that calories can be exchanged with the subsoil – feeding them into the building in winter, and extracting them in summer. The system is controlled digitally, which minimises electricity consumption by optimising use of the subsoil and the building’s heat pumps in real time. Drilling for the sys-tem requires a very small surface area as it uses innovative slant drilling tech-nology. The minimal footprint after dril-ling and during construction means that it is suitable for the majority of buildings, including in dense urban areas.
An ecological and political challenge I’m currently helping design and execute the solution on the Clamart project. Cel-sius decided to test the system on their own building, to replace their current
system of gas heating and refrigeration units. The project will act as a demons-tration model for clients. Basically, my role consists of developing and optimi-sing the synoptics and hydraulic circuits on the suggested solutions to get the installation as productive as possible, studying and comparing the offers with regard to the speciîcation criteria, and developing the 3D prototype of the plant room. I’m enjoying working on this project because, as well as being an eco-friendly response to climate change, there’s also a political aspect to it, making it really relevant. President Macron has decided to include eco-re-novation in his plan to help the economy recover after COVID-19. Geothermal en-ergy is deînitely a sustainable means of increasing a building’s energy efîciency.

Protecting pharmaceutical laboratory data
PROJEÉCDTISTO
Over the last few years, cybercriminals have been focusing on obtaining bank details, but companies in the sector have made signiîcant improvements to their security. As a result, hackers are increasingly turning to the medical sector, which is full of individuals’ personal data and information about research and medical breakthroughs. This new threat means that the pharmaceutical industry has been forced to take action. Martin, a validation engineer in Sweden is helping one company protect its IT system.
Increasingly sought-after data Hackers have now begun to prey on health data and the threat has led to a reform in the medical sector after numerous laboratories had their sys-tems hacked, gaining access to all their data, including their manufacturing processes. The international biophar-maceutical group that I work for has therefore had to adapt and secure its IT systems to tackle possible external threats. We migrated all the laborato-ries’ and production units’ IT systems to an ofine network, which hackers can-not access.
A strategic project for the client The project’s scope is very extensive because it covers all of our client’s la-boratories and production sites in Sweden. Information security is now a priority, and the risks are high, which means working under pressure and at

a fast pace. The project includes a lot of different systems and affects many employees. Networking and creating links between colleagues spread across different units is key to success. Going through that amount of documentation was also a challenge, since the project also covers previous systems where the documentation may be incorrect or obsolete, which means we need to be really careful and work alongside the experts.
Discovering a new sector I originally studied chemical enginee-ring, but that didn’t cause any problems with the project. It was actually great to have the opportunity to work on an IT project and gain experience in this sector, which is in fact related to many others. That’s the best part about being a consultant. I was responsible for draf-
ting migration instructions for the IT engineers, compiling documents about installation and operation, and gathe-ring information from the experts. I’m also in charge of distributing documen-tation for review by quality assurance, IT experts and system owners. I hope that this experience will open the door to new opportunities and exciting pro-

An unusual extension for the Syngenta site
Sector:Industry Start date:March 2020 Duration:10 months Location:Belgium
Located in the Seneffe region, the Syngenta plant is currently undergoing a lot of changes. The Swiss agtech company will invest €18 million this year to develop new projects. Extending lines, a new building... these new facilities will create 30 new jobs on the site. Mattias, a young project engineer who graduated from the École polytechnique de Bruxelles in 2017, was tasked with monitoring the various projects on site to make sure deadlines were met.
€18 million invested Syngenta has launched a number of projects this year, and needed help and support to monitor them. The projects were designed to signiîcantly increase production capacity by extending an existing production line and adding ano-ther building and storage tanks on site. Not bad for a site with 170 employees whose current production capacity was struggling to keep up with orders. The manufacturing process was analysed, enabling the bottle-neck – the slowest section that was causing hold-ups – to be identiîed. This area will be doubled, which is deînitely a more economical option than rebuilding an entire produc-tion line.
Meeting deadlines The priority for the extension project was înishing the commissioning so that it could be put into service in September 2020. I was most impressed by Syngen-ta’s drive to get the project înished on
agaptualité|n°27 | September 2020
time and the means they provided to achieve it. In order to save time, we ma-nufactured the building’s metal struc-ture (and installed îttings and pipes) at a temporary location while working on the building permit and civil engineering. Once the concrete base was ready, we moved the tanks and the building to their permanent location. Commissioning be-gan even before the building was îni-shed. All that’s left to do now is install the components (pump connectors, conden-sers, sensors, etc.) and piping and the electrics (cables, electrical boxes, etc.).
From civil engineering to commissioning My role is to follow the site’s progress every day to check that everything is compliant in terms of safety, the design and the schedule. I act as a point of contact for the design ofîce and I’ll also be in charge of monitoring the commis-sioning, which will begin in mid-August. The best part is that I monitor projects
from A to Z, from civil engineering to ins-talling piping to commissioning. I’m lear-ning so many things that I didn’t know about before, in terms of electronics or civil engineering, for example. Another great thing is that I was also responsible for smaller projects, for which I had even more responsibilities and freedom.

agap2 is supporting Handicap International’s educational project in Burkina Faso
Since the beginning of the year, agap2 France has been backing Handicap International through its support pro-gramme, agap2act. Each time one of our consultants launches a new project, we make a donation to the associations that are working in the îeld. Part of these donations will go towar-ds supporting an inclusive educational programme in Burkina Faso. As is often the case in West Africa, disabled children are
Camille - 3 years working with Les Restos du Cœur
I’ve always wanted to get involved with an association, but as a young working woman it’s often hard to înd the time. And then I discovered "Camions du cœur": you vo-lunteer once a week, in the evening. I distribute food in Vil-leurbanne, just outside Lyon in France. Every evening, more than 150 people come to eat. Lots of them come to eat a hot meal, but more and more come for the social aspect, to talk without being judged.
Volunteering has given me a lot over the years. The rela-tionships we create with the recipients are really special and when they leave with a smile on their face, the fee-ling is indescribable. This commitment is essential for me, which is something agap2 and the clients I work with un-derstand. So if you want to get involved too, please contact me: camille.farcot@agap2.fr. We always need new vo-lunteers. But we also need equipment, toys for children, school supplies, and of course food.

less visible in Burkinabe communities; many stay at home and some were never ofîcially registered. The project’s main aim is to increase the number of children who continue their educa-tion by 50%, whilst bolstering the continuity between primary and secondary education. Similarly, the second aim is to in-crease the number of disabled youths who pass their occupa-tional training in the project’s partner establishments by 50%.
Recycling at the ofîce: good for the environment and the community
Each year we recycle all of the paper we use in our French ofîces in collaboration with the ELISE network. In 2019, the waste we recycled saved: 51 trees, 72,668.5 litres of water, 15,797.5 kWh and 1,753 kg of CO2, or the equivalent of a 35,060 km bus journey.*
Working with the ELISE network also enables us to help get disabled and disadvantaged people into work.

CÉLIDEITNOT EXPERIENCE
Optimising energy in the wood industry
Working closely with its clients, Rayonier Advanced Materials uses renewable resources to create pulp products. When Rayonier decided to optimise its manufacturing process, it turned to Dalkia Smart Building, which specialises in key energy optimisation work. Since June 2019, Dalkia has been working on a wood dryer that they custom designed for their client, tailored to the site and their issues. Cyrille, a Dalkia project manager, tells us about this €6 million project which will be operational at the Tartas site in the Landes in late 2020.
What did the client need? C.P.: Rayonier produces wood pulp which is used in a number of everyday products. Our client wanted a turnkey solution to reduce its energy consump-tion, so we designed a wood dryer that uses waste energy from the smoke produced when wood burns. As well as being a great alternative to chemi-cal products, it helps save money. Si-milar systems are used in wood pellet factories, but this is the îrst time that it has been used for woodchips. This €6 million project included designing and manufacturing the 70-metre long dryer with 8 chimneys – making it the biggest in Europe.
The dryer will be operational at the end of the year. How does it work? C.P.:The aim was to create a virtuous circle – by taking the calories from the wood burners’ smoke, we recover ener-gy that would otherwise have been lost. Hot water is combined with the smoke and passes through the dryer, blowing in hot air to dry the wood. The dry wood is then used to fuel the biomass bur-
agaptualité|n°27 | September 2020
ners, which produce smoke again. The belt dryer will be placed in the biomass drying area, where 80% of our client’s activities take place.
Why call on Ludovic to manage the site? C.P.:The project wasn’t just impressive in terms of its size; the site is also cove-red by the Seveso directive for sites with dangerous substances. We have to deal with the waste gas. The risk is always present. The chemical risks mean that there are a lot of constraints and safety rules, which convinced us to get Ludo-vic on board as a Works Supervisor. We had previously worked with Ludovic on the Grand Hôtel de Bordeaux project. We knew his proîle and, even though he didn’t have any experience in the indus-try, his signiîcant experience in mana-ging works made the difference. Today he is in charge of “production” activity and works full-time on site. He manages a lot of different aspects each day, in-cluding subcontractors, clients and site security.
agap2 Expertise
Ludovic works on this site which is covered by the Seve-so directive due to its high risk level both in terms of its tech-nical aspect and project mana-gement.
On-site, my work consists of monitoring and assisting subcontractors with regards to assembly and putting together schedules. I also lead daily meetings and take part in mee-tings with the client. Since the site is covered by the Seveso directive, safety is absolutely vital, and we have also implemented additional measures as a result of the CO-VID-19 pandemic. To ensure this aspect is well managed, I also give talks on security, and I am responsible for monitoring and correcting Luid analyses.
This project is a driving force in my career as I had never been involved in a project like this before. It’s a large-scale project – it’s Europe’s biggest wood dryer – which gives me even more motivation to make sure it’s a success.
Ludovic Works Supervisor
