Five Very Simple Ways To Eat Healthier Every Day
Eating a healthy diet is something that every man and woman understands is important. Unfortunately, not everyone takes the time to eat healthy. There is sometimes a perception that a healthy diet requires a large amount of work, planning, measuring and counting. This is not true. Eating a healthy diet means making many common sense decisions throughout the day. There are five simple tips that will help anyone eat a healthier diet.
Eat Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet. They provide natural sugars that increase energy as well as fiber that helps to regulate the metabolism. Each major meal during the day should include vegetables and possibly fruit. It is best to have at least two vegetables with each dish. Additionally, fruit and items like carrot sticks make excellent and healthy snacks between meals.
Avoid Processed Foods
A simple way to follow a healthy diet is to avoid processed foods as much as possible. Processed foods include fast foods, most canned foods and some frozen dishes. They also include highly processed carbohydrates like white sandwich bread. These foods contain preservatives and high levels of salt and sugar. The processing also sometimes adds saturated fats to extend shelf life or improve flavor. Too many processed foods in a diet can lead to heart disease, diabetes and unhealthy blood sugar spikes after a meal.
Choose Low-Fat Alternatives
Many diet plans for women suggest choosing low-fat alternatives to high-fat products. This is a good and simple way to eat a healthy diet. Dairy products, condiments and even cooking oils or other ingredients all have low-fat or non-fat alternatives. Choosing these items will help to reduce caloric and fat intake on a daily basis. Some low-fat products are even fortified with extra vitamins. It is important to remember that portion control is still important even when eating low-fat items like yogurt or cheese. Eating a large amount of a non-fat product is not healthy.
Control Portions
Portion control is the key to many diet plans for women. This is crucial for any healthy diet. Portion control means only putting enough on a plate to satiate hunger. A single regular portion of food is generally the same size as a fist or the palm of the hand depending on the food. A good meal should have equal portions of protein, vegetables and carbohydrates. Loading a plate with large amounts of food will encourage overeating at each meal. This is unhealthy regardless of what foods are on the plate. It is better to prepare too little food and then to make more than it is to prepare a huge tempting feast.
Eat Lean Proteins
A very simple way to eat a healthy diet is to choose lean meats and proteins. The fattier proteins like heavily marbled beef or lamb fillets contain unhealthy saturated fats. It is better to choose leaner items like pork or chicken. Another simple tip is to remove the fatty portions of proteins. This means the skin on chicken and strips of fat along fillets. Fish should become a regular part of the diet. Fish like salmon and sardines are healthy and contain important nutrients.
