List of Participants3 PREFACE
This publication contains the papers presented at a seminar on atro
phic rhinitis in pigs held in Copenhagen 25th-26th May, 1983 under the
auspices of the programme for the Coordination of Agricultural Research
of the Commission of the European Communities.
Atrophic rhinitis is a classic disease in pigs, but general agreement
about its definition has not been obtained. The disease in its severe form
is economically important and continuously causes economic loss to pig pro
duction throughout the world, especially under intensive husbandry systems.
The purpose of the seminar was to summarize available knowledge on the
disease and particularly to present recent achievements concerning its
aetiology and pathogenesis. The time seemed appropriate for bringing a
group of European research workers together in order to stimulate future
work aiming at a better understanding of the complex mechanisms behind
the development of atrophic rhinitis, which might again lead to better
strategies for control.
It is the organizers' hope that this publication, by presenting informa
tion to a wider group of people committed to prevention and control of eco
nomically important pig diseases, will contribute further to the achieve
ment of the purpose of the seminar.
Sincere thanks are extended to the chairmen of the sessions: Dr. J.T.
Done, Dr. J.M. Rutter, Professor I.M. Smith, Dr. P. Schöss and Dr. M.F. de
Jong for valuable assistance during the meeting and for help with the edit
ing of manuscripts.
Copenhagen, June 1983.
