SNOMED Clinical Terminology – Introduction
PREREQUISITE:NONE
This one day introductory level course is designed to provide a foundation for health care systems developers, software analysts, programmers and clinical staff who plan to use or implement SNOMED Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT®).
The course explains the relationship between SNOMED CT – as a clinical terminology – and other representations of clinical data including simple coding systems and classification systems such as

ICD10. The structure and content of SNOMED CT is reviewed to explain how SNOMED CT represents clinical ideas in ways that support effective use of clinical information. The Subset and Extension mechanisms that enable SNOMED CT to be adapted to meet particular national, local and specialty requirements are described.
Where relevant the course references to relevant panCanadian standards that relate to the use of SNOMED CT. The course also includes a tutorial on using CliniClue® to explore SNOMED. This illustrates the subject matter of the course and enables attendees to continue expanding their practical knowledge of SNOMED CT after the course.
Those wishing more in depth knowledge of SNOMED CT should follow this course with the Advance course (see below).
HL7 V3 RIM Certification Exams
The Standards Collaborative is pleased to offer certification testing on HL7 V3 Reference Information Model (RIM).
The HL7 V3 RIM Certification exam is based on the Reference Information Model (RIM) model 2.11 (the version of the RIM on V3 Normative Edition 2006).Note that the RIM is the foundational base of all V3 artifacts.Certification testing is offered to those industry participants who are expected to have a working knowledge of the HL7 V3 Reference Information Model (RIM) or its derived artifacts.Interface analysts, health care systems analysts, medical software programmers, and medical informatics faculty and students are all potential candidates. The knowledge required to pass the exam can be obtained by selfstudy of the RIM and its associated normative structural vocabulary as well as through participation in the HL7 education sessions, and field work implementing HL7 V3 artifacts.
HL7 V3 Implementation Technical Focus The use of HL7 V3 to implement interfaces within a particular application context can have hidden complexities. While HL7 V3 has been designed to reduce the amount of required sitespecific negotiation, it is not possible to simply pull the message specification(s) “out of the box” and implement them. This tutorial guides attendees through the HL7 tools which are used to navigate and interpret V3 specifications, and provides an indepth understanding of topics necessary for building robust interface solutions.
The tutorial is designed to address the needs of the implementer/developer, bridging the gap between domain experts and developers. It will address techniques and design patterns for manipulating messages: parsing and serialization, extended validation, communication, and storage and retrieval.
The tutorial will cover topics such as:
Spring 2010 – March 35, 2010, Toronto, Ontario Canada Health Infoway

STANDARDS COLLABORATIVE EDUCATION TUTORIALS
Wrappers and Queries
Documentation of message specifications
Transport Protocols and TLI
Implementation considerations for data types
Moving from V2 to V3
Tips and strategies for successful implementation.
Upon completion of this tutorial, participants will know:
How to develop and carry out a plan for creating HL7 V3 interfaces
How to read and write HL7 V3 message specifications.
SNOMED Clinical Terminology  AdvancedPREREQUISITE:A GENERAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF SNOMED CT MODEL AND/OR PART 1, INTRODUCTION (SEE ABOVE) This one day, advanced level course is designed to expand the users’ prior knowledge of SNOMED CT. Thecourse covers the use of the context model for SNOMED expressions and SNOMED CT interactions with information models.Topics such as compositional grammar pre and post coordination and semantic interoperability will be discussed. The course will also cover cross mapping from SNOMED CT and reverse mapping procedures, processes and issues. SNOMED interactions within the HL7 RIM (Reference Information Model) and effective information retrieval will also be covered. Those interested in the technical aspects of storage, exchange or retrieval of clinical data will find this tutorial most informative.
