First of all, I would like to thank Prof. Dr. Phil. nat. Dieter Silber for his support and ever lasting
inspiration during an eventful five year period (2002-2007) in my career. During my M.Sc. at
University of Bremen, I worked under Prof. Dieter Silber as a teaching and research assistant.
During this time, he aroused my curiosity in the field of semiconductor physics and devices with
his unconventional and yet effective approaches in the above mentioned field.
In summer, 2003; I worked with Dr. Franz-Josef Niedernostheide in the field of Light Triggered
Thyristors at Infineon Tech. AG, Munich. This exposure to industrial problems in developing
high power Light Triggered Thyristors helped me to engender an interesting mini-project and a
master thesis on the latest problems of Light Triggered Thyristor development.
This successful cooperation with the colleagues of Infineon Tech. AG and the invaluable
experience of Prof. Dieter Silber in the field of thyristors motivated me to continue my research
in the field of high voltage bipolar power devices, a part of which is the basis of my present PhD
thesis.
I would like to thank my ex-colleagues from Infineon Tech AG, Dr. Hans-Joachim Schulze, Dr.
Franz-Josef Niedernostheide and Mr. Uwe Kellner Werdehausen for the financial support, many
interesting and fruitful discussions and providing me with necessary simulation, measurement
results. I would also like to thank my colleagues in University of Bremen, Mr. Saeed Milady,
M.Sc, Mr. Uma Maheshwara Reddy, M.Sc and Ms. Salwa Basurra, M.Sc for helping in
maintaining a friendly and healthy working atmosphere and countless discussions which were a
significant part of our learning process.
I extend my thanks also to my colleagues at Siemens AG, Erlangen; Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Markus
Uder, Dipl.-Ing (FH) Rolf Neubert and Dr. Johann Holweg for several interesting discussions
and providing me with some old, interesting measurement results which are relevant to the topics
of the present thesis.
Finally, I would like to thank my friends and family for their un-questionable support in my
personal and professional life.
