U.S.A.THE UNIVERSITY FRBSS, CAMBRIDGE,PREFACE
discuss the departureThe following pages of
the State from the Great Trust charged upon it
in regard to Equality, and propose a remedy.
this State is fulfillingThe argument is : The not
the Trust undertaken by it, to establish and
maintain equality far as that is practicable inas
the government of men ; an undertaking which
means, in effect, that the State shall provide a
reasonable of regulating Inequality. Themode
failure is due towant ofmen sufficiently equipped
for the requirement. To treat existing adjust-
ments as a performance of the Trust is to
support a False Equation. There is probably
energy enough for remedy, for however true it
may be that human, like inanimate, energy is
slowing down, it appears to remain relatively
The remedy is substi-the same. to be found in
tuting for current forms of education a system
which shall Organize the Brain, that energyso;
vi PREFACE
may be set free and then directed efPectively to
the purpose. Education thus conducted should
indeed be competent to provide for all purposes
the Great Trust is only an instance.
The argument is followed by an Illustration.
In 1902 Brooks Adams published The New-
Empire. In 1903, before I had seen that work,
I asked Mr.Adams to join me in the new under-
taking of unity in the instruction of the Law
School of Boston University. He accepted, and
from that time to this has been contributing of
his great energy and other gifts to the desired
result. Iowehim a debt greater than Ican pay,
but not greater than I wish to acknowledge.
The system of unity in education, worked out
length in these pages, is foreshadowedat some
in the Introduction to The New Empire, and has
since been stated more or less fully, from time
Mr. Adams and myself ; in Central-to time, by
Law, published in and par-ization and the 1906,
ticularly in two addresses delivered in February,
and published as a Bulletin of the Law1908,
mentioned, under the title of Unity inSchool
The present undertakingModern Education.
