Furthermore, a better understanding of self-organization may lead to new classesof methods for fabricating ordered structures, which are important in many applications.A brief survey of the experimental study on pattern formation in various types of sys-tems, i.e. fluid systems, chemical reaction di!usion systems, granular media, nonlinearoptical systems and dielectric barrier gas discharge is given in Chapter 1.
