A long-standingco-operation between the Faculty of Technology of Addis Ababa University (AAU) andDarmstadt University of Technology (DUTEC) in different research activities was the basisfor this common research project conducted with the support of the Department of ElectricalEngineering (Dr. Fekadu Shewarega) and the Department of Civil Engineering (Dr. Abdul-karim Hussein Seid) of Addis Ababa University. Between June 1999 and April 2001 researchteams were involved in field trips to Ethiopia.This doctoral thesis would not have been possible without the cooperation and assistance ofnumerous persons in Ethiopia and Germany.
