UniversalDesign(UD)isastandardofusabilityforeveryone.Bydefinition,UDisthecreationofproductsandenvironmentsmeanttobeusablebyallpeople,tothegreatestextentpossible,withouttheneedforadaptationorspecialization.TheintentofUDistosimplifylifeforeveryonebymakingproducts,communicationsandthebuiltenvironmentmoreusablebyasmanypeopleaspossibleatlittleornoextracost.
TrueUDisunobtrusive,eveninvisible.Ifyou'veeverbeenthroughanautomaticdoor,you'veexperiencedaversionofUniversalDesign.Aramporcurbcutisjustaswelcometosomeonewithababystrollerasitistosomeoneinawheelchair.
"We"havecreatedthehandicapanddisabilityformanypeople.Thehandicapisthestructureitself.Thedisabilitycomesfromdealingwithit.Inadditiontoaccessandinclusion,UDbringswithitanextramarginofsafety.However,UDisn'taboutrampsandgrabbars,althoughdevicessuchastheseremainnecessaryforassistance.
