" Is this true," is a question often asked by a
child, after reading story. Perhaps isa it well,
sometimes, to be able to answer this question
in the affirmative. If it is possible to relate
the history of remarkable persons in such a
manner as to interest the young, such stories
may create a better taste in reading than that
which is formed by the constant perusal of fic-
whichtion, is now employed not only in works
intended for relaxation and amusement, but as
a vehicle to inculcate the deepest principles of
philosophy and religion. This volume is in-
tended as the first of a series of the lives of
distinguished persons adapted to the under-
standing of the young.
