Executive Summary

Executive Summary
With IT and business requirements in the telecommunications industry becoming
increasingly complex, service providers rely more than ever on proven technology
from reliable vendors. Rapid developments in technology have paved the way for
advanced voice, data, and content services. Transaction volumes in the
telecommunications industry have reached new heights, meaning that system
performance has never been more critical. In order to handle large loads of data.
Working together, Sun and LHS offer the reliable, high-performance solution you need
to face these challenges. The BSCS iX architecture lays the groundwork for
outstanding performance outputs. With its parallel processing capabilities in rating and
billing, BSCS iX has achieved excellent results in these latest benchmark tests run on
the Sun Fire E25K server with the Sun Solaris operating system.
BSCS iX is certified for the latest hardware platforms, and its flexible and highly
scalable architecture can support operators whose subscriber numbers range from
entry level to 40 million and beyond.
In general, benchmark figures are meaningful only if they are based on “real-life”
conditions. In the laboratory, such conditions are stressed to the extreme to identify
and overcome potential boundaries and bottlenecks. The traffic logic varies from
medium to complex to ensure a realistic rating load. Typical usage patterns are
applied for traffic simulation.
Key results from the benchmark performance test are as follows:
Result Summary
Supports 40 Mio.
Subscribers
Billing for 40 million subscribers efficiently achieved
Supported 4800 concurrent users with response times < 1s
Billing
1.125 million bills produced per hour
1.265 million bills produced per hour
1
129 thousand immediate billing requests processed per hour
Rating
278 million records rated per hour
Customer Care
Approximately 600 thousand contracts created per hour
Served 4800 concurrent customer service representatives
Supported 10,000 concurrent self-care clients
Startup
Data for 40 million subscribers extracted in 45 minutes
1
This measurement demonstrates the performance improvement gained with the
recently announced 1.8 GHz USIV+. All other benchmark tests were executed using
USIV+ processors clocked at 1.5 GHz.

Solutions for Today and the Future from LHS and Sun
BSCS iX from LHS and the Sun Fire servers combine state-of-the-art technologies to
create a powerful business support solution that responds to the challenges facing the
telecommunications industry.
BSCS iX
BSCS iX is a scalable, modular customer management, rating, and billing solution that
can be installed quickly and is able to support innovative marketing and pricing of
telecommunications services. BSCS iX is based on a client/server architecture with a
UNIX operating system on the server side and a combination of Web-client
applications and Microsoft Windows operating systems on the client side. BSCS is
installed at over 130 sites around the world and supports a wide variety of
technologies to meet the most demanding service provider requirements.
Sun Fire Servers
The Sun Fire E25K server that was used in this performance test is a powerful
enterprise-class system equipped with up to 72 UltraSPARC IV+ processors. The
system's performance has been proven time and again in a long list of benchmarks,
which demonstrated both the power of each processor and the scalability up to
numerous processors. This server – just like Sun's other Sun Fire systems – also
provides an impressive set of RAS (Reliability / Availability / Serviceability) features
such as predictive self-healing, dynamic reconfiguration, and dynamic resource
management. These features are complemented by the world-class system and
resource management capabilities of the Solaris operating system.
The long-term partnership between LHS and Sun Microsystems, as a leading provider
of hardware platforms and software solutions, has led to an impressive number of joint
customer success stories. Regular benchmarks to test the performance of BSCS and
on Sun Solaris have proven that high-volume billing requirements of global telecom
service providers can be met without any limitation. All LHS products run on the latest
Sun Solaris platforms or use Sun's Java technology, for example the Customer
Management Server (CMS), LHS' API to the customer-related BSCS functionality,
uses Java as the programming language. LHS is a registered partner in the Sun
Partner Advantage Program.

BSCS iX
BSCS iX provides unmatched features, functionality, and flexibility that fulfill the
requirements of the most demanding operating environments. BSCS iX is suitable for
wireless, wireline, or multi-service communications providers in all geographies. It
brings key benefits to existing customers operating earlier versions of BSCS or
operators considering replacing their legacy systems. It is also ideally suited for start-
up 2G, 3G, or wireline businesses. BSCS iX is the perfect fit for communications
providers pursuing a prepaid, postpaid, or a multi-service convergence strategy,
allowing major cost reductions.
BSCS iX Advances
BSCS is the customer care and billing system of choice for communications providers
with high requirements in the areas of scalability, performance, openness, promotions
and marketing, support for corporate customers and business partners. Since 1993,
when BSCS was launched, development of the solution has been guided by the
following parameters:
o
o
o
o
o
Scalability – BSCS iX is not only proven in benchmark testing to support 40 million
subscribers, but it is also designed to support future volume increases and service
level enhancements for small and medium-sized operators.
Service continuity – The SDPX option allows the deployment of BSCS iX in a
high-availability configuration. Therefore, it secures the use of BSCS iX for all
transactions requiring reliability and security. With SDPX, BSCS iX supports a
service availability of up to 99.999 percent, which corresponds to a service
interruption of no more than 5 minutes in a year.
Adaptability and flexibility – BSCS iX provides APIs based on the CORBA 2
standard, which enables the existing architecture to expand to accommodate
future requirements and add-ons.
Innovation – BSCS iX continues the innovative path in the product's development.
The iX architecture embraces Web technology and enables low-risk, stepwise
migrations through its modular approach. Some of the new features in BSCS iX
are:
