Andrew Jonathan SmithAcknowledgments
First and foremost I must express my thanks to Prof. Claudia Staudt and
PD Dr. Manuel M. Lohrengel for kindly supervising this thesis.
Also, my warmest gratitude goes to Dr. Achim Walter Hassel for his guidance,
mentoring, and support in the past eight years.
Of course, I could never have finished this thing without some (actually: a lot of)
help. So here goes: Thanks go to Dr. Srdjan Milenković for a seemingly endless
supply of samples and smiles, to Dr. Belen Bello-Rodriguez for keeping all of us
sane in the lab, to Kirsten Lill for being the best office-buddy ever as well as a
good friend.
Very special thanks go to Christian Fenster who has the dubious luck of being
my very good friend and my colleague at the same time. Thank you for being
there.
Over the past two years I was lucky to have some very capable students sup-
porting my work. Thank you Pedro Perezim, Sarah Brittmann, Dana Frankel,
and André Abts.
Many thanks also go to my colleagues for helpful discussions and experimental
support: Dr. Daniel Sanders and Andrei Ionut Mardare as well as the rest of
the “ElKo’s”.
I must also thank the excellent staff at the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisen-
forschung for their help and support: Andrea Mingers and Daniel Kurz for ICP-
OESmeasurements,MonikaNellessonforguidanceusingtheFIB,ErikaBartsch
for TEMts, and Ralf Selbach and his very capable crew of crafts-
men: Markus Bormann and Robert Thissen, among others, for creatively con-
structing various widgets and gadgets.
Next I would like to thank the people that are my friends: Andreas Serr, Katha-
rina Gerigk, Niels-Jakob Küttner, Mark Fellmann, Andreia Ioana Popa, and
Jana van der Kloet. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you... I wouldn’t have made
it without you!
Finally, the most important person in my life: Maria Georgiou. I cannot express
the amount of luck and gratitude I feel, knowing that you are there.
