Bob’s questions
A reallife scenario Bob is a 58yearold UK national who has been employed in a number of countries over the course of his working life. He is planning to retire in two years’ time on his th 60 birthday. He is worried that, over the years, he paid pension contributions in three dierent countries and that this may mean not being able to get a full old age pension. Bob goes onto EUlisses and searches for informationonoldagebenetsandpensions, rstasaworkingpersonandthenasapensionclaimant.EUlissesguides him to the answers he seeks:
Bob’s rst question ’Do I lose my pension contributions that I paid when I worked in the UK?’
EUlisses answer
None of your pension contributions are lost if you lived, worked and paid contributions in more than one country.
Bob’s second question ’When should I apply for my oldage pension if I have worked in more than one European country?’
EUlisses answer
Each country has its own rules on how, when and whether you qualify for an oldage pension. One of the main determining factors is the retirement age. Other factors may include how long you have paid contributions and how much you paid, how long you have lived in a country, how much you earn and your family situation […]. Exactly when to apply varies from one country to another. You are advised to contact the institution you last paid contributions to or the institution in the country where you live, several months before reaching pensionable age.
Satised with these answers, Bob goes on to carry out a new search choosing ‘family member’ to see if there are any other benets for his wife and children.
