There are problems in evolutionary biology that can
only be solved by massive computing power. Howev-
er, extensive use of computers creates problems of its
own, usually new to biologists. This thesis contains
the journey of a biologist, who was not content with
the computing limitations of his day. He set out to
create the first globally distributed computing sys-
tem for evolutionary biology on the Internet:
evolution@home.
Its first public simulator addresses Muller’s ratchet,
a population genetic process that might cause ex-
tinctions of asexual genetic systems like mitochon-
dria, non-recombining bacteria and others. This
could not only contribute to extinctions of species,
but also to the uncultivable majority of microbes.
