Compulsory only for candidates for the degree of MA. * Assessment: (i) The compulsory module will be assessed by a mixture of coursework (one assessed essays of 4,000 words) and an unseen examination; the option modules will each be assessed by two assessed essays each of 4,000 words. (ii) Candidates for the degree of Master of Arts will be required to submit a satisfactory dissertation of 14,000 words on an approved topic. The dissertation will carry a credit rating of 60 credits. (iii) Candidates may be permitted to resubmit the written assignments for one of the modules and/or resubmit the dissertation as required by the examiners. Qualifications awarded: (i) Candidates who accumulate 120 credits from the taught modules (i.e. not the dissertation) and satisfactorily complete the assessment requirements for each of the modules will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma.   (ii) Candidates for the degree of Master of Business Administration will be required to submit a satisfactory dissertation of 15,000 words on an approved topic.   Qualifications Awarded: To be awarded a master's degree a candidate must: (i) obtain at least 90 credits at 50% or above in the taught modules and no more than 15 credits below 40%; (ii) have satisfactorily completed all coursework requirements in the taught modules; and (iii) achieved a mark of 50% or above in the dissertation.   To be awarded a master's degree with merit a candidate must: (i) obtain at least 90 credits at 60% or more in the taught modules; (ii) achieve a mark of 60% or above for the dissertation; and (iii) have no fail marks   To be awarded a master's degree with distinction a candidate must: (i) obtain at least 90 credits at 70% or above in the taught modules and a mark of 60% or above in the dissertation; or (ii) obtain at least 60 credits at 70% or above in the taught modules and a mark of at least 70% in the dissertation; and (iii) have no fail marks.   Candidates who successfully accumulate 60 credits from the taught modules (ie. all but the dissertation) may be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate of Business Administration.   Candidates who successfully accumulate 120 credits from the taught modules (ie. all but the dissertation) may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma of Business Administration.   1. A candidate's percentage performance on a given module will be deemed to be the weighted average of their performance across the assessments applied to that module. Each module will be assessed by an assignment and / or a written examination. Where there is more than one piece of assessment for a module, the precise weight given to each form of assessment will be stated in the programme handbook As a general rule it is modules rather than individual pieces of assessment that have to be passed.   2. The number of modules where re-sits or re-submissions are allowed is at the discretion of the exam board. No student shall be reassessed more than once in one module. The mark obtained for resubmitted work or a re-sit is capped at 50%.   3. Candidates will be required to re-submit a failing research proposal. A passing research proposal, either at first or second submission, is required to progress to the dissertation.    4. Entry Requirements: Candidates should normally have at least a second-class honours degree in Economics or a related subject from a British University, or its equivalent.  Course Aims: The course is designed for Economics and Business Economics graduates who intend to pursue a career in the business sector, and for those already working in business who wish to develop relevant skills. In addition to the opportunity to acquire expertise in general economics and quantitative analysis, the course provides a core of essential material in the fields of business strategy, finance, planning, forecasting and decision-making. Training is provided in the use of computer software for the formulation and solution of business problems. Course Aims: To provide students with a detailed knowledge and understanding of the problems of crime in society. The course is historical in scope and uses a variety of social science disciplines and theoretical perspectives to examine the problems of crime, criminal justice, and punishment, in society over time. It focuses on changing perceptions of crime, its explanation, its control, its impact, the processing of offenders and the way in which they are punished. The course also aims to provide students with an understanding of the different methods available for researching the problems of crime, criminal justice and punishment.
