Description
Sounds and images of the events of May- June 1968 remain: photos of the riots in the Latin Quarter and particularly those published by Paris-Match, live radio broadcasts from the scene of the events, atmospheres, tension and street sounds are all set in our memories. Of television there remains only the memory of a tainted reputation: that of inadequacy and absence. The aim of this article is to define the role of television in the events of 3 May to 30 June 1968 and to investigate what French people saw, given that 61 percent of households had a TV set and that audience ratings confirm that TV news was watched more than usual during that period. The study of the «legend of the blank screen» implies the articulation of three stories: that of the national crisis as such; that of the televisual transposition of the crisis of May-June 1968; and that of television as an institution.
