Si sa propre culture est en cause, défendra-t-il l'État soviétique ou les intérêts de sa communauté ?

Because of its institutional character, the ethnological practice in USSR is different from its counterpart in the West. The choice of research topics, the organization of team work in the field, the relations with local authorities and with different institutions are ruled by a specific system. The fonction of an ethnologist within society is also different. He belongs to the domain of public service. He is consulted in case of conflict. Consequently the ethnologist is not confined to the part of analyst but asked also as an active agent of the authorities. Is it possible that the perestroïka would bring a change to the method and conceptioas of ethnology? Will the ethnologist endeavor to keep at a distance from the part he played in the past? If his own culture is involved, will he side with the Soviet state or with the interests of his own community?
