La presencia francesa en la cultura malgache.
Chantal CRENN
cultura malgache. Es una integración sin deculturación. Hacer estudios y venir a Francia aparecen
Abstract
French Presence in Malagasy Culture
Chantal CRENN
50 000 Malagasies, most of them from Imerina (the central part of Madagascar) are now living in
France, and constitute what has been called a silent migration. But does that mean that they are
assimilated? It is through the history of French-Malagasy relations that we can answer that question,
and show the specific character of Malagasy emigration to France. Because of their colonial history
there is an attraction / repulsion relationship between Malagasies and France.
The Merinas, as a sophisticated elite, are captivated by French culture, but as the former rulers of the
island they have great difficulty in accepting colonial domination. Criticism of the former power and
participation in nationalist movements cohabit with the choice of France as a place to study or retire.
The attraction exerted by France on Malagasies is either economic and social or else lies in their
cultural traditions, which place great value on higher education.
These reasons survived from colonial times through the Ratsiraka regime and the Zafy government. For
a Malagasy, arrival in France usually brings disillusionment and an identity crisis, both caused by the
gap between their inherited dreams of France and the cold reality. Not being at once recognized as
peers by French society, Malagasies find it offensive to be obliged to prove their value. This loss of
prestige and of part of their economic welfare makes them feel declassé. So they live in France as in a
rather hostile world and are tempted to withdraw into their own community. But once the shock of
discovery of their position as strangers is absorbed, Malagasies continue in their movement towards the
host society in order to achieve personal success and to maximise the benefit they can receive from
French culture. The group is devalued, they acquire different friends, and some of the typically
Malagasy values are kept at a distance. However they do not repudiate their ethnic personality or the
attachment to Malagasy culture. It is an integration without loss of culture. Coming to France andacquiring an education can be seen as distinct elements of the Malagasy identity, strongly rooted in
their history and linked to their future as ways of preserving -or rediscovering- a social and economic
status in relation to that of their forebears.
Zusammenfassung
Der Französische einslub auf die Madagassische kultur
Chantal CRENN
was man eine stille Migration nennen konnte. Kann man sie deshalb als assimiliert bezeichnen ? Man
