Archipel - Année 1974 - Volume 8 - Numéro 1 - Pages 119-1462. Marcel Bonneff (CNRS, Paris) describes one of the most magnificent rituals of Central Java, the Garebeg. Although it is tied to the muslim calender, it is in fact an ancient royal ritual (probably dating back to the Mojopahit period) which used to consecrate the union of the king and his people. Although monarchy as such has disappeared from Java, this ritual has experienced a singular process of revival since 1971. 2.
