Surgical haemostatic agents: treatments of last resort

HAS has assessed the role of various surgical haemostatic agents in therapeutic strategies: one class of blood-derived products based on human fibrin, and eight classes of medical devices, based on aldehydes, cyanoacrylate glue, PEG, alginate, cellulose, collagen, gelatine and polysaccharides. Surgical haemostatic agents are indicated for the improvement of haemostasis when conventional methods such as compression, sutures or electrocoagulation are inadequate. HAS recommends that these products be used only as alast resort, following the use of conventional methods. The comparative data are insufficient to establish whether one product is superior to another.
