Description

Enfance - Année 1973 - Volume 26 - Numéro 3 - Pages 145-174
In 1954, under the auspices of the World Health Organisation, a survey was made in Uganda on the psychomotor development of children suffering from kwashiorkor, together with their mothers.
At the same time a comparative study was made of healthy- children of similar age.
In 1955, our research was incorporated in the « Longitudinal Study on the Growth and Development of the normal Child », sponsored by the International Children' s Centre in various European countries and the United Stales.
The survey was followed up in Uganda until 1960 and could be resumed in 1970 and 1972 thanks to another grant from the World Health Organisation and another from the Aquinas Fund.
A similar survey was indertaken in Sénégal in 1955.
The younger children were examined by the Gesell test and those over 3 years old by the Terman- Merrill test.
Our first findings demonstated that the level of psychomotor development of the children was in advance of their age. Indeed it was noticeable the younger the child the greater the degree of advancement. This superiority in advancement ivas lost by the age of 18 months. It also proved difficult to elicit a response to the Terman- Merrill test among children from a traditional, rural environment.
Our residts led us to undertake a similar survey among children of different social backgrounds and of newborn infants. Those in Uganda and Zambia were examined by the André-Thomas method.
Gradually during the course of the study in Uganda and through the short visits to other African countries where we were able to examine the children from different backgrounds more and more emphasis was laid on the biological, psychological and sociological factors influencing the child's development . We found a marked difference between the newborn infants of Uganda and Zambia. The grant from the Aquinas Fund unabled us to study more thorougly the environment of the child in Zambia and to compare it with that of Uganda.
We came to conclude that the difference in development between, the newborns of Uganda and Zambia was related to their differing environments ant the mothers9 experience of life.
