This book, published under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities,
aims at providing insight into the objectives of a permanent inventory of ongoing projects in
the biomedical sciences and health care in the Member States of the EC (MEDREP) as it is
intended by the Commission and presents the results of a pilot study carried out by the
undersigned.
We are greatly indebted to all our interlocutors in the Member States for their stimulating
discussions, their advices and their generous co-operation in making available the project
descriptions for the pilot data base.
We wish to thank also the staff of the computer centre of the Institute of Mathematics,
Information Processing and Statistics IWIS-TNO and of the printing house Eindhoven Druk
BV/Lumozet, who assisted in the technical realization of the data base and this publication.
Special mention deserves Mrs. G.M. Pot-Van Regieren Altena, who designed the lay-out.
As it was stated at the Fourth World Congress on Medical Informatics (MEDINFO) held in
Amsterdam from 21-26 August 1983 on the occasion of which the start of MEDREP was
announced by the Commission, researchers in Europe generally are perfectly informed about
the trends in the U.S.A. and Japan, but at the same time have only little knowledge on what
is going on in their neighbouring countries. It is hoped that MEDREP will fill this gap.
Just because much work remains to be done on the implementation foreseen in the
forthcoming years, MEDREP deserves the co-operation of all Member States. A positive and
simultaneously critical attitude will offer the best chances for success.
